Old Salty Dog Posted June 10, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 10, 2010 Since we will only be in Vancouver for two nights pre-cruise, and want to minimize currency exchange, two questions: do taxis use credit cards or is cash required? Do many places accept US currency as we have found in other parts of Canada? We usually get money at an ATM at the airport, but want to avoid excess if possible. Putterdude Posted June 10, 2010 #2 Share Posted June 10, 2010 You will find that all of the taxis will accept your credit card. While not legal tender, the US$ will be accepted virtually all businesses, services and restaurants in Vancouver however the US$ is worth about $1.04 CDN (close today) but you will not likely receive any exchange and will receive your change in CDN$. Old Salty Dog Posted June 10, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted June 10, 2010 Thanks Putterdude. Exactly what I wanted to know. That is the same as we found when cruising the Maritimes. Old Salty Dog
PennyAgain Posted June 11, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 11, 2010 You're going to pay to change money one way or another either with a bank or credit card fee or taking your chances on what merchants will give you. I always make it clear to friends and co-workers that I will buy their Canadian money when they return from a trip that includes Canada. I always have enough to start a trip to Canada including taxis, mass transit, snacks etc and then use my ATM card to get more.

When we come back from Mexico we try to have 500 pesos or the States have about $50 USD for our next trip down there.
Putterdude Posted June 13, 2010 #6 Share Posted June 13, 2010 I always find it interesting, we accept US currency in Canada but once we as Canadians travel much further south than Belligham, WA nobody wants to take Canadian currency.

Enjoy your Sunday Cheers Dennis
