Volcano Lava Flow In Hawaii!!

We are booked on Island Princess 3/5/05 cruise & just heard there is lava flowing in Volcanos National Park.

Saw this on CNN Headline news and found this picture & story http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6908076/

Hope it is still flowing when we get there since we are renting a car and going there!

We saw the fingers of lava flowing into the ocean around 10 p.m. from the Dawn Princess deck as the ship rounded the southern edge of the Big Island.

I hope you get to see it! There was no lava flow visible from the ocean when we went last year. And I think it was about a 10 mile hike to see it on land. Oh well...seeing the lava beds over the road was really something! And the lava tube was great...very cool after being out in the hot sun all day.

Just got off the Island Princess today. YES, we did see the lava flow. The ship passed by it as we were leaving Hilo on our way to Kona. You can see it from the starboard side--we just sat on our balcony and ENJOYED!

We were there last May on the Pacific Princess II. Our new friends, Melody and Allyn, rented a car. We went straight to the park visitor center where the ranger was able to tell us exactly where to go to see the flow. Parking was about 3/4 mile from the older flow and then it was another 1.5 - 2 miles to the current active flow. You are walking on lava with active tubes somewhere below, so it becomes very hot. BELIEVE THEM when they recommend bringing a lot of water with you - bring large bottles from the ship. We bought sandwiches at the hotel by the visitor center, and ate as we rested during the hike.

 

It was worth it, but is was a grueling hike. Again we urge you to go prepared with more water than you ever think you will drink - you will need it.
