Kiel Canal to Hamburg by train- info.

Recommended Posts

We are thinking of going to Hamburg to see a large model train exposition(still there?)

How does it work from the Kiel Canal stop to get to Hamburg and back.

What is the travel time. ? Is it worth it to go to Hamburg or are there better places to visit with this stop?

Can one still see the WW II sub pens there?

Eurodam July 18,2010

Thanks

Make sure that you pre-book your tickets if you do not find these queues:

EURODAM does not call any stop alongside of the Kiel-Canal nor it has a passage through the Kiel-Canal.

The ship berthes at Ostseekai in Kiel.

The walk from Kiel Cruise Terminal to Central Station is about 20 minutes or by bus in few minutes.

What is the travel time. ?

Your ship arrives at 08.00 hrs and leaves again at 17.00 hrs.

CAUTION: the same day MSC ORCHESTRA is in port and have full debarkation and embarkation. All trains will be very full.

There is normally a complimentary MSC Shuttle for the train station - I am not sure if you can just get on it as HAL-passenger.

08.21 hrs will be too early.

08.55 hrs is not a direct train. You need to transfer in Neumünster (arr. 09.20 hrs at track 3 and continue 09.25 hrs at track 5) and will be in Hamburg 10.14 hrs.

09.21 hrs is a direct train but expected to be very crowd.

So German Railways will add one train for cruiser only on this day:

09.40 hrs.

But 08.55 hrs would be easy to catch. The sooner you are at the station the better your chance to find seats.

For 09.21 hrs I would recommend to use 1st class.

Here are the instructions to buy the tickets:

Once you arrive you need to find Metrobus 6 (ride is included in ticket from Kiel).

It's just on the way to the cruise terminal so read the instructions for the way to the cruise terminal.

Last connection back 14.20 hrs - arrives in Kiel 15.36 hrs. Next one with transfer but maybe a little tough to be back 16.30 hrs at the Cruise Terminal.

Lübeck - World Heritage

Can one still see the WW II sub pens there?

Well it's on the other side of the Kiel Fjord which means totally different direction to Hamburg or Lübeck.

Thank you so much. You are the best!!!

What is so nice about Lubeck to you? Do you reccomend it over going into Hamburg? What would the connection be to go there?

I love this:

Connections is great:

2 trains per hour which make it very easy accessible. Average of 1.15 hrs ride time.

All in walking distance from the Central Station in Lübeck.

And Niederegger if you love sweets, chocolate and like to discover a treasure box:

You will not have more time to see anything else but the Miniature Wonderland. So this is the destination for you - you will be only able to see something around or on the way to the train station like

Landing Stages:

or

Town Hall Square
