DaKingfish Posted June 15, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 15, 2010 Hey Folks: Traveling from Virginia to NY to embark from the Brooklyn terminal. Has anyone ever taken Amtrak to travel to Brooklyn? If so, what is the closest station to the cruise terminal? How far is it from the cruise terminal? Any advise on planning this? Thanks, -DK
GTJ Posted June 15, 2010 #2 Share Posted June 15, 2010 There is no Amtrak service to Brooklyn. The closest station is New York's Pennsylvania Station in midtown Manhattan. From Pennsylvania Station there are subways and taxis available for travel to Brooklyn. The distance is about 7 miles. (Many commuters to Brooklyn coming from points south alight from Amtrak trains at Newark, N.J., then change to the PATH train to World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. This then makes for a shorter trip into Brooklyn, about 4 miles. This does involve an extra transfer along with the concomitant schlepping of baggage, though the PATH trains leave from the same platforms as the Amtrak trains arrive.) At a higher cost there may be more convenient direct bus service from your area in Virginia to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. At a lower cost there is curbside bus service from Washington to Manhattan (some trips can be booked for as little as $1.00 each way). There are many options, but your decisions are likely to be most influenced by your budget, the number of people traveling, the amount of baggage (and the ability to manage the baggage), and the comfort level in dealing with New York City's urban environment. Brighton Line Posted June 15, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 15, 2010 As said Amtrak does not even enter Brooklyn. Public transit to the Brooklyn terminal is minimum at best, it can be done but your best bet is a taxi. There are other threads here with detailed directions to give to your taxi driver.
