reesegirl Posted July 7, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 7, 2010 I have followed this board for years but seldom post because I do not see the need My DH and I have been on 7 cruises 5 of them with carnival. I have been a waitress for 36 years (by choice) and I wish people would pre-tip me so I would know what kind of service they are expecting. I usually follow the threads about tipping and can not believe how cheap some people can be. A few people say oh yes I waitressed while going to school or they had a summer job well it has been my career and it is how I make a living. We just celebrated a holiday and let me tell you I worked a lot harder for not any more money than I usually make in 8 hours I just had more of a mess to clean up. I always leave my wait persons an extra tip while onboard but I think next trip I will leave even more. I guess what I want to say is $10. per day per person is dog gone cheap and anyone who removes the automatic tips should have to walk in my shoes for 10 hours and then think about what tips are all about go ahead flame away but leave the tips alone!! reesegirl Posted July 7, 2010 Author #4 Share Posted July 7, 2010 Actually we had a great weekend we just had a lot more customers and they were a lot messier and a lot drunker and we made no more money than a regular day
shortstop95 Posted July 7, 2010 #5 Share Posted July 7, 2010 Well said. We always do the auto-tipping and do extra the last night for all areas where service has been super- which on Carnival for us is pretty regular. The staff in the dining rooms work so hard and try so hard to please- we can't not give them extra and you see how much they appreciate it. Those who remove tips or stiff the staff. Shame shame shame.

Well you have dice as your avatar so i guess its okay to throw away your money in the casino but not tip the waiters or waitresses for busting their butts? Like i said the rich get richer cause they are tight with their money! The middle class tips better cause we struggle to get where we are i guess so we know what its like. JerseyshoreBruce Posted July 7, 2010 #11 Share Posted July 7, 2010 Hope that pay it forward thing works for ya. Being that so many people are so cheap they should just make it a mandatory 20.00 per day. It would be cheaper for me that way and even it out for the cheapies so the crew should come out even or ahead!:p

I totally agree. I've worked for tips my whole adult life after I served my country in the military for 5 years. I have noticed people act like they don't know they should tip. If you can't afford to tip, stay at home, cook your own meals, clean up after yourself, buy your own beer, and stop making other people wait on you!!!
reesegirl Posted July 7, 2010 Author #13 Share Posted July 7, 2010 I am not saying that I want to go broke taking care of the dining room staff I just realized after this long weekend that our waiters deserve everything we are supposed to give them and definetly more. I do not know if the general public realizes that Uncle sam taxes me on the food that I sell regardless of whether my customers tip me or not. And I do not get to set the amount on what I am taxed it is a law that was passed back in 1982 Like I said tip me up front so I know the kind of service you are expecting giving me 5 bucks on a $60. tab is not very kind and I get taxed on more than your $5 It may not seem kind but I will give you better service if I know I am going to be tipped correctly I suppose that is why the cruiselines had to go to automatic gratuities I remember the old days of just getting the envelopes on the next to the last day of the cruise and how empty the dining rooms were on the last night and how dissapointed the waitstaff looked

Sooo because I enjoy playing craps, I don't tip? I'll have you know I tip the dealers in the casino as well as the wait staff. Do you tip dealers in the casino? travelntreats Posted July 7, 2010 #17 Share Posted July 7, 2010 So because someone removes the auto tips, everyone "assumes" that those opting to do this are NOT tipping at all ??? And I am pretty certain that not everyone is watching everyother passengers tipping habits (but if they are, they sure are nosey !). And how does anyone know the # of passengers that may be removing tips and for what reason (other than the once posted sheet of paper that was floating around that supposedly had the staterooms that had removed tips) ? It's none of anyones business how the other passengers tip at all. Although I am certain there are those that do remove those tips due to being either disatisfied or just plain ol' cheap, but I honestly believe that there are many that remove the tips simply because they want to give the tip personally to the staff. Personally I prefer to give tips to the staff in person....and it is usually more than the suggested guidelines. So go ahead and flame away if you don't agree with the way I "Choose" to take care of my tipping of the staff, but in reality, it's all a personal matter of choice. jennmaybe Posted July 7, 2010 #19 Share Posted July 7, 2010 I will say that $10 a day is nothing for these hard-working folks. However, when I eat out, I always tip based on my service. I should not have to pre-tip my waiter/waitress with hopes that I will then receive good service. I should receive good service either way. If my waiter/waitress is very friendly, on the ball and help fix our order (if anything is wrong), I always leave them extra on top of the usual. If our service was bad, I do not leave as much. When I say bad, I mean the service we receive from the waiter/waitress. If my food is not good, I do not hold the waiter/waitress accountable for that. I do agree that waiter/waitressess and cruise employees do not get paid enough. Some of you are some of the most hard-working people out there! What would we do without you?:o

okwriter Posted July 7, 2010 #21 Share Posted July 7, 2010 My niece works as a full-time waitress, and she is 7 months pregnant. Darn right I tip well (over and above the pre-paid gratuities) if the service is good! ;)
