ronjo Posted July 7, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 7, 2010 We will be on the Silver Shadow for our Alaska cruise next year. looking at taking the Gold Star Dome train from the port at Seward to the airport in Anchorage. Would like to hear from others who have done this. Does the train depart in the AM after the ship docks? Is there a stop at the airport.
mrsgritoli Posted July 7, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 7, 2010 Stops at the train station in Anchorage. From there, you take a cab to the Airport (short ride)
Paint Horse Posted July 7, 2010 #3 Share Posted July 7, 2010 I have only taken the train arranged by Regent. It arrives at the airport itself.
Rare jpalbny Posted July 8, 2010 #4 Share Posted July 8, 2010 We took the train from Seward to Anchorage a few years ago; it was a very pretty ride. Though it didn't leave Seward until 6PM, that was fine with us as we rented a car from the Hertz terminal next door to the train station and drove around sightseeing all day. The website (http://www.alaskarailroad.com/) shows a similar schedule for this year's trains. You want the "Coastal Classic" which goes from Seward to ANC. There may be other private trains but they aren't listed on the AK RR site; not sure if the "Gold Star Dome" train is one of those? As others have said, the AK RR train drops you off at the train station in Anchorage (411 West 1st Avenue) which is about 5-6 miles from ANC airport. ronjo Posted July 9, 2010 Author #5 Share Posted July 9, 2010 Is the Grandview train available to Silversea ? I read on a Regent thread that it leaves from the pier at Seward, shortly after the ship docks, and goes directly to the airport in Anchorage. On the Regent site the train is avaiable for post cruise transfer. I only see a bus transfer on the SS site. The only other train from Seward does not leave until 6 PM. and does not go to the airport.
pamfj Posted July 11, 2010 #6 Share Posted July 11, 2010 Do not miss out on this part of your trip!!! We were onboard from Anchorage to Seward on June 9 and this was one of the highlights of our trip!! Gold Star service was definitely worth it. We were still early in the season and there were only 20 passengers on the Gold Star car that day!
