At a tender port, your ship anchors in the harbor and they use the lifeboats (or other boats a little larger than lifeboats) to ferry people over to the dock. Just takes a little more time than pulling right up to the pier and docking. At some locations, like Belize, the ship has to anchor quite a way from the dock because of reefs, but most are very close.

The dock at Grand Cayman will not accomodate large cruise ships so all of the cruise ships offer a tender service here. The distance from between where your ship docks and the tender port in Cayman is not to far so it won't take too long to tender back and forth.
