Laughlin Glacier Hike in Skagway

Has anyone purchased a Hiker Service ticket on the Whitepass railroad and taken the Laughlin Glacier hike without a guided tour? When purchasing the Hiker Service ticket we have a choice of boarding the train to return at either 11 or 3:30. We will be getting on the train at 8am, which means we get off at the Laughlin stop at around 9am. We do a lot of walking/hiking and tend to keep a pretty fast pace, but I think the 11am return would be too soon and the 3:30 would be too late. Is there enough to do to keep us busy until 3:30?

I met someone on our train who said they were taking the 11am train back, but that is really pushing it. You could easily do it with the 3.30pm return. The trail can be a little hard to follow along the rocks but usually there are others on the trail too. Not sure about "keeping you busy." Hiking and the scenery are all around you. You can slow down your hike or stop more often to absorb the scenery, take photos, etc. Other than that, really nothing else around. A great hike and great location.
