Either system will work.

Just so you know. The connection is VERY slow, so the minutes disappear very quickly. If you just want to read and send e-mails (preferably without big file attachments such as pictures), then get on line, download your e-mail, sign off, compose replies off line and only then sign on again and download. The ship internet connection is really not meant for browsing, unless you have unlimited budget and lots of patience.

My suggestion is to take your laptop with you during a port stop. Most if not all ports have internet cafes that are MUCH cheaper and they offer high speed connection.

Is a windows system really necessary? Won't a mac do?

Not to worry, it will without any problem. Whatever your LT and OS, if your system has a Wi-Fi card or W-F usb key, you can connect to the ship's AP, or any other AP.

All you need is a computer that is capable of wifi and has a recognized browser. The operating system is not important. If it works at home on the internet using wifi, it will work on the ship. It is S L O W. You are using a satellite connection which involves a noticeable up and down time to the satellite and you will be sharing it with everyone else on the ship. Ships move and sometimes loose their satellite connection momentarily until the computers controlling the dish can reposition it. Expect signal lose therefore causing you to reconnect. As stated before, it you just want to browse the internet like home or do online email, you better have very deep pockets full of $$$ and buckets of patience.
