Halifax NS without a Car

We do not plan on renting a car in Halifax. Any suggestions on what to do within walking distance of the ship? (we will have a teen and pre teen with us.) Not opposed to taking a taxi to an attraction either, just did not plan on renting a car or going to Peggys Cove. Thank you!

There is no need to rent a car if you are staying in the city. Just about all the main attractions in Halifax are within walking distance. Walk the entire length of the harbour front from the pier to the Casino. Be sure to visit the Maritime Museum.

 

Climb up to the top of Citadel Hill. This is quite a climb but the fortress and museums are great. Walk along Spring Garden Road to the Public Gardens. If at any time you feel the need you can always take a taxi.

 

Go to Google Maps and do some exploring.

The kids might like the Discovery Center.

 

Pier 21 seems to be another favorite. Citadel Hill. There is the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic along the waterfront.

 

If you like Churches, Saint Mary's Basillica is beautiful.

 

Historic Properties is very nice.

 

The Harbour Hopper tour would be a fun little excursion for downtown.

Tours are the best however. Jonathan of info@yourcab.ca is a terrific source and well worth the tour cost. Immigration museum at Pier 21 is close and just a few dollars - easy, informative and great for all ages. :)

I would suggest just walking the boardwalk from Pier 21 to the casino. Walking it at a liesurely pace will take about half an hour but with all the stops along the way you might easily spend the day walking one way and if you are too tired to walk back just hop into a cab. As others have mentioned, check out the Pier 21 immigration museum right at the cruise dock, it's quite fascinating. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the HMCS Sackville Naval Memorial are both along the boardwalk. There are also harbour boat tours (other then the Harbour Hopper), restaurants, shopping and you'll likely see a few buskers around as well. If you enture up the hill from the waterfront you can expand your choices even more.

Is Halifax where the FRED bus is? It looks like FRED might give you a ride up the hill. Also ferry across the harbor and know that Samuel Cunard of yes Curnard lines also ran the ferry. I sure hope this information is true as I have just planned to do my own with the help of FRED.

Thanks for all the help! Bowie, one thing I read on these Boards about FRED is that it can get crowded and you may need to wait for a few buses before one comes along with room. But since we plan on being leisurely I think it could come in handy for us as well.

You could visit the Public Gardens on spring garden road or go to Point pleasant park. Also the NS Art Gallery is on George Street.
