Eastern Itinerary questions

Can anyone help with some info ?

Puerto Rico - I know it will be late, is it worth getting off and walking around with family? Are things closed, is it an ok area? We will have kids, so casinos are out.

La Romana - Same questions as above, and has anyone done the show? Since there are five of us, I think it would cost an arm and a leg.

Nassau - ok, we are not doing Atlantis. We live in an extremely touristy place (any guesses?), so I just don't have the energy for an Atlantis type experience. Are there public beaches, or do any of the normal resorts offer day passes? As I mentioned, we have kids, so the adult only ones are not possible.

Can't help with Puerto Rico, I have not left yet.

From what I have found out about La Romona, It may not be the nicest place to go with children. They stop at Catalina Island earlier in the day. Most people who have responded to my question about this place have gone to the Island and skipped the Mainland. One person was not to happy with the mainland.

There are a couple of beaches you can go to. Although the Atlantis sounds to be nice, I live where there are many places similar to that. We are going to Blue Lagoon Island. There is many things to do there and is is small enouogh that our group can do thier own thing (dolphin swin, stingray city, Parasail, or just loung on the beach). There is also Paridise Island, not sure what is there.

When are you going? We are leaving March 13, 4 weeks and counting.

San Juan-we walked around(up hill out-down back) Old San Juan with plenty of daylight from 4-about 6:30(seemed longer). We very much enjoyed it, looking at the old buildings, chapel and the pigeon plaza. I'm not a great walker, but I did fine and felt good for the excercise. :D There were lots of people and a visible police presence the afternoon we were there. Going back to the ship after dark, but still early it didn't feel unsafe at all. Just keep to the main streets, the traffic jam on those narrow streets is soooooo huge you will not be isolated. :D

La Romana, we just walked around the little area outside the ship....nothing to see there. Those who went to the town or ampitheatre said it wasn't worthwhile.

The best thing about Nassau is watching the ship dock. It is like threading a needle. Don't miss it!! There is a beach at Nassau.........I know cause the ship gives you beach towels......but I don't know info as we did a van tour.

  • 3 weeks later...

:) San Juan is by far my favorite port of call. Although it does not share the pristine beauty of Grand Cayman or the cleanliness of other islands, Puerto Rico offers a lot more opportunity for fun and adventure. I have stopped in San Juan several times on cruises and loved it so much I travelled back there on several vacations for weeks at a time. If youre looking for a public beach, Luquillo is probably the best, but it takes a little while to get there. Punta Santiago is another very beautiful, less crowdwd beach. If you wish to stay closer to San Juan I would reccommend Condado beach which is right in new San Juan, about 10 minutes from Old San Juan.

Cruisy:

We also had a blast in San Juan. We actually arrived an hour earlier than the estimated arrival time, so we had some extra time on hand. We definately did not want to miss the fort, El Morro. In all guides and books it said that they would close at 5:00 PM, but as we got there, they had open until 6:00 PM. A very interesting place with beautiful views. Also for kids a great place to explore.

We took a cab from the pier to the fort, as we were not sure how long it would take us to walk. After the fort we walked through the beautiful and narrow streets, slendering by markets and small shops. We picked up a couple of items we needed, had some very delicious ice cream and wandered back to the ship at our pace.

I wish we would have had more time in San Juan, as it is a beautiful and lively place.
