disembarkation day tour of venice...can we do it independently?

We are sailing on the MSC Magnifica in December. We will have time on disembarkation day to visit Venice as our flight home is not until 7pm. We have looked at the excursions offered by MSC but wondered if anyone had been to St Marks Square etc independently? I am sure we can get a taxi or water bus, but what would happen with our luggage? Is there a left luggage place at the pier so we can pick it up then go to the airport? Any information gratefully received!

If anyone has been on the organised trips into Venice for the day what were they like?

Thank you fellow cruisers!

Hi. Welcome to CC.

Venice is very easy to do on your own. You can leave your luggage at the port in their left luggage facility.

Then you could get get the people mover to piazzale roma. From there you can get a vaporetta 9water bus) down the Grand Canal (very scenic) down to St Mark's Square. You can easily explore on foot from there. In fact it is pretty easy to do a lot of venice on foot - it really is not that big. I stupidly bought a 3 day vaporetto pass when I was there last year, thinking that I'd be using it all the time and hardly used it at all other than to do trips further afield to Murano and the Lido.

Thanks for all your help! Can anyone confirm there is definitely a place to leave luggage at the port? Just don't want to be stuck on the day with our cases and unable to go anywhere!

I used it myself a few years ago. It was on the right hand side just before you left the terminal. Used to cost 1 euro per bag but likely to be more now I suppose.

Here is another thread on the same subject from last year
