Car Rental and self guided tour of both sides, what do you think?

HI Guys and Gals,

 

Since this will be my first time to this Island what do you think about doing my own tour of the island? Any special problems with car rental or with driving around the island? If I do decide to try this any thoughts on planing? I am still looking for that special place for lunch and this type of self led tour may be to get where the usual tourist might not other wise get? What do you think?
