Freeport

The ship arrived early 6:30am, and was leaving at 1:30….so we didn’t have much time. The ship docks at a Container Port…so don’t expect much beauty. We left the ship around 9am for the $5 fifteen minute cab ride to Port La Lucyca. I heard some negative things about Freeport, so wasn’t especially excited about being there. However I found the place to be very nice. The people were friendly, Port La Lucyca was nice and so were the beaches. Port La Lucyca is a combination of “markets”, stores, bars, three hotels and a beach. When we arrived at Port La Lucyca, the women headed for the markets who were all basically selling the same thing…but the people weren’t pushy. After the markets we headed over to some of the inside souvenir/jewelry stores. Nothing special…nothing cheap..but the air-conditioning felt good. We stopped at one of the outside bars…Coconuts I believe was the name. The bar tenders were friendly, the drinks were inexpensive, (2 corona’s for $5) and the mixed drinks were strong!!!...around $5. As our group continued to enjoy themselves, my wife, I, and a few of our friends went over to the beach. The beach is FREE, but not the use of the hotel chairs…so just bring your towel from the cruise ship and sit. (Don’t forget your carry on cooler and water bottles). The water was clear, warm and the beach was beautiful. I wish we had more time. Some of the people in our groups went over to the Casino and made a deposit. They said the hotel was beautiful, but the casino was small. We arrived back at the dock around 12:30. We had a little time left, so we walked and shopped around the few stores that are located at the dock. Take note…although the ship arrives at 6:30am, the stores at Port La Lucyca and the dock were not open until 9am!!!! And don’t believe what some people say about Freeport…..it is getting a bad rap. Get off the ship and go to at least Port La Lucyca. It is only a $5 cab ride each way.

I certainly agree with you about Freeport. Its a lovely little town, We also had a taxi that was $5 to Port Lucaya and it held about 8 or 10 people. Our driver was delightful, told us all about the town, locals are not permitted in the casinos. Very little crime in that town. Its the cleanest port that I've been to and we've been to many. I loved shopping at the market when we were there in January. There are also a few little storefronts that sell clothing in the square. Some coach bags were found to be sold there. After we walked around a while we decided to go across the street from the market and go into the casino. spent a little while there then stopped for an ice cream, and then back to the ship.

Personally, I prefer Freeport over Nassau....Nassau is more commercialized than Freeport. Lots of designer stores in Nassau...didn't go into any of them. I plan to stop in some on our next cruise to those same ports next month.

Our Lucaya is a good place to spend a day. Sometimes people forget that Grand Bahama had much destruction during recent hurricanes and had to rebuild. We found the people we met to be very gracious and appreciative of the cruise business.

I found the same. They were very very nice....
