Walk to Fort St. Catherine

Yes it is walkable. Once you get off the ship you basically cross the street and start uphill. You'll first pass the unfinished church. Take the road to the right of the church and follow straight. Out of nowhere you'll see the most beautiful views. The seas...

Ft. Catherine will be off to the left a bit and the beach to the right.

There are no longer concessions or anything at the beach. Used to be the old club med hotel that sat up on the hill and was imploded 2 years ago. Since then things have changed a bit.

If you have facebook there is a page called

revitalize st.Georges.

Check it out.

If you love to walk as much as we do we continue to walk with the ocean to our left and walk a few miles around the island and back into town. You'll find the spot where the town crier greets the cruise ships that actually dock in the town rather then tender in.

We did this several times on an old NCL crown cruise.

Enjoy . Bermuda is beautiful as are the people.

Our Oct cruise to Bermuda stops first at St. George's. We would like to visit Fort St. Catherine and it appears to be within walking distance from town. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge? We would also appreciate any feedback on the adjacent Catherine Beach.

Thanks.

Hi Amarillo,

Here's a little map to show the route suggested by F.C.

St-Georges.jpg

It's a fair walk all the way round, but the views are worth it.

Plus, you'll see that you can take a shortcut if you want to.

Have Fun!

And another thing... (I really have to think things through before posting)...

If you go to Gates Bay - the beach beside Fort St. Catherine, that's exactly where Sir George Somers and his crew were washed up when their ship, the Sea Venture, smashed on the reef just offshore in 1609.

And that's how Bermuda got started!

Have Fun!

Enjoy it all !

I find you see more when you walk rather than chance missing something by driving by it !

Thanks for the great feedback. Sounds like a walking tour to Fort St. Catherine and back via the scenic route is perfect for us. We do like to walk and as Maureen O'Hara says in The Quite Man, the walk would just be a "good stretch of the legs."

Did this several years ago when the Celebrity Zenith was still in service and docked in St. George. Seem to remember there being these "shuttles" that ran back and forth from the town square for a fee a lot lower than taxis. They basically piled in as many people as they could, and everybody split the fare.

That would be the shuttle that is still making trips to Tobacco Bay. As long as we have been using it, it was a straight fee per person, no fee splitting. It used to be $2 each way and has gone up to $3 which now makes it cost more than a taxi if you split that fare 4 ways. Taxis are also faster because you have to wait for the shuttle to make it's trip back to the square while taxis are ready and waiting.

I just came back from Bermuda less than a week ago. From the St. George ferry stop (I assume the tenders from your ship will dock around there too which is at the center of town) it is a 10-15 walk to Catherines Beach as well as adjacent Tobacco Bay beach, which has changing facilities and refreshments which Fort St. Catherine beach does not. Half the walk is uphill, you go past the Unfinished Church, a local landmark and the trail is very clear. From the tenders/ferries it seems very far since you go around a peninsula from the beach to St. George but overland it is a very quick shortcut over the hill.

It is a very pleasant walk through town to the beaches there.
