cs Posted September 6, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 6, 2010 Friday night on the Dawn we hit some pretty rough waves. I think the captain was trying not to scare us and was understating how high the waves really were. He said 9 meters (30 feet) but I think they might have been larger. Is there any way to find out? Any type of marine archieves? Thanks
montekat Posted September 6, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 6, 2010 I found this site which lists the Dawn and the day in question. However, the wave heights are missing for the day in question. http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/shipposition.phtml?call=C6FT7

cs Posted September 6, 2010 Author #5 Share Posted September 6, 2010 Google "NOAA" - search "Wave Data" I tried doing this but it's too technical for me. I have no idea what I'm looking at :)
jcl410 Posted September 6, 2010 #6 Share Posted September 6, 2010 Here's a link to the closest NOAA buoy to Bermuda. It's 200 miles to the west. The highest waves were only around 17 feet on average. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/show_plot.php?station=41048&meas=sght&uom=E&time_diff=-4&time_label=EDT 30 foot waves are VERY large. A ship like the Norwegian Dawn can handle them safely, but I doubt it would be very comfortable. Back in 2005 she hit a series of three 70 foot waves that caused the windows in two cabins (on deck 9 and 10) to break, and flooded 60 other cabins. Now those were big waves!
