Belize scary? HAHA NOPE!

Before my wife and I went on our cruise lots of people on the boards said Belize is scary, dont leave the port etc. Heck even the cruise director said it was dangerous. My wife adn I left the port, went on atvs in the jusngle adn through the tubing river. We looked out of the bus and saw alot of the place. Its not scary there at all. In fact the people there are nice, the place is beutiful and if your scared that easily I wonder where you live? Here in Tennessee I could take you to some scarier places than belize. BTW the same goes for Roatan and Mexico too! Not scary! Also somone said "What about the people trying to sell you goods" REALLY? you think its scary when people push you to buy somthing? The only time that scares me is when I am in Wal-Mart! ;)

I agree. My TB (wife of 25years) went on a self guided tour across the bridge and to the other end of town (St Johns church). It was very nice. We did have to say "NO Thanks" a time or 10 but no one pressured our NO answer.

DH and I had been once before in 2006 and done the cave tubing and had a bit of a city tour from the guides on the bus.

We were there on Sept. 10th this cruise, which is our wedding anniversary and Belize's anniversary of defeating the Spanish in 1798.

We walked over to the memorial park and watched some of the Official St George’s Caye Day Ceremony with the locals (saw the President inspecting the troops and the Bay Queen and her court) and then we went to the Museum of Belize on our own. Small museum, but interesting stuff and it used to be a prison.

Then we to the Wet Lizard in the port area and had a Belikin beer and wandered around the port shops. We meant to see the Marine Museum but we got a little lost and it was really hot and humid that day.

It is an extremely poor city, but everyone we met said Good Morning to us and were very proud of their heritage.

Don't think so, but you never know, we talked to a lot of people that week.

We didn't come to any of the meet n' greets or events. I introduced myself and DH to some of Sue's group one night at the Sushi cart, but I saw Big John all over the place all week.

We stopped in Belize last Jan and had the same experience as previous posters described here.

We were even told by the waiter at dinner the night before we got to Belize that "if there is a port to stay on the ship at, that Belize was it" and how the ship only stopped there as an "act of charity". I was worried all night and my stomach was even a little "off", I had visions of not making it back to the kids at home from the way people (the waiter, people on CC, guidebooks and so on) were talking.

 

BUT there was no way I wanted to miss the excursion we had booked to Lamanai. It had poured rain at our previous port and we ended up back on the ship in the hot tub all day so I wanted to see something new.

 

I was SO glad we went. Our guides, Edgar and Nate were so awesome. We saw amazing country and learned alot about the people. Never for one minute did we feel unsafe and I hate to think that there were pax who likely were frightened off by what ship staff were saying and may have missed this. I will forever remember the sight of the top of the high temple over the trees in the jungle as our little motor boat pulled up at the dock to the Lamanai Reserve area.

 

Ok, yes they are poor and no, this is not like home where most people have nice homes and two cars, clutching Starbucks. If I wanted to see that I could have just stayed home. Never for one minute was anyone rude or "frightening" to us. They seemed to be very happy to have the tourism.

Yeah, We just mostly met people as we sat at the casino adn I drunk fosters all week lol
