Just off the Dream-Horrible cigar smell from room next door

cruisin again

Recommended Posts

We just got back from a cruise on the Destiny. We had an aft balcony room and the smoke drifted onto our balcony and it was offensive.

How can a smoker dismiss the fact that people can be offended by the smoke, that it can cause sore throats, and brochial issues? Your habit effects my health and I have a right, just as you, to enjoy my cruise.

I also never understand the mother who says I would never smoke around my children or the person who says I would never smoke in my house. Why is that you think? Because they realize second hand smoke could harm their family and stink up and discolor their home. But my cruising neighbor better "suck it up" Ridiculous!

Yea I know it's allowed on Carnival but just because it is not against the rules does not make it ethically right.

Don't book an Aft balcony if you are that offended!

You must be new to cruising! CCL has made changes to their smoking policy over the years. They have restricted it in indoor space, made one side of the ship smoking (as opposed to both), and have introduced Spa Cabins.

No, not new. Just talking about balcony smoking - maybe I'm not good at expressing my thoughts in English....what I'm trying to say is Carnival ,or any other company, change their policy when they need to,to meet guest and/or health requirements....I'm thinking that if it's true that 75 to 80% of guests are non-smoking and start pressuring for non-smoking balconies, it might just happen - either one side totally non-smoking, including balconies or totally non-smoking balconies. Just a thought. But I must say that it does bother me when non-smokers overreact when they are in a "smoking permitted" area and expect smokers to not smoke? it gives us non-smokers who are truly affected by the smoke - allergies, asthma etc...and not just comlaining to compain - a bad name.

The majority of non smokers that post to these boards don't have a problem with smoking neighbors on the balconies from what I have read.

They may say that they are not fond of it but it doesn't bother them.

I myself as a smoker don't see the problem with smoking on the balconies, howerever I do relize while the ship is docked in a port that there may be an issue if the wind is not blowing.

But I will never understand how a puff of smoke from a cigarette from a balcony on a ship moving at 22 knots with the wind blowing across the open ocean can affect someone's health so much that they have to act as tough they need to be hospitalized.

I mean really who spends their entire vacation time out on the balcony anyway.

Inside is another issue all together.

The Casino area, Disco and Piano Bar are the worst, so yes I agree with the nonsmoker not being able to enjoy these area's as they should be able to.

I don't understand why the cruiselines, if they can't install proper ventalation systems at the time of building the ships, don't just install some air puifier's or what they call smoke eaters in these area's.

No it will not totally do away with the problem, but maybe it would help the situation for the nonsmoker's in these area's so that they too can enjoy them the same as the smoker does.

The cruieslines would probably even make more money by doing this as the nonsmoker would be able to spend more time in these area's therefore spend more money helping to contribute to the bottomline profit's.

Okay.... I smoke. I have only had a balcony cabin... I booked this so I would not have to get dressed go out late eves and early mornings to smoke... I dont smoke in my home..nor do I smoke in hotel rooms, so I most certainly would not smoke in the cabin. I was very mindful to check and see if anyone around me was out..of course I could not see above me... but... I spent little time each day out there. I was careful with ashes..though there was very little wind. I do not think they should allow smoking in cabins.. but balconies should be to each purchasers pleasure.

Just to clarify, we are talking about this board, and smoking and not smoking right? The non-smoker wouldn't have a problem in the first place if she/he weren't stuck inhaling or putting up with the smoker's "problem", or as it is more commonly referred to; their addiction.

NOTE TO CARNIVAL CRUISELINES: Non smokers want your help with this, we don't want to smell cigars, and cigarettes in our rooms, and on our balconies. Today you can't smoke in most hotels, restaurants, public venues, airplanes, trains, buses, etc. Start asking on the comment cards who smokes and who doesn't and if the smoke/cigars was a problem/concern on the cruise for the guest.:eek::eek::eek:

My husband and I always get a balcony so I can enjoy reading out in the sun. On our last cruise I could not use the balcony because people on both sides of our cabin were smoking. I think they should put people who want to smoke all on the same side of the ship so non smokers can enjoy their cruise too.

I am a smoker and totally agree with this idea. I constantly ask, if people are on their balconies, if they mind if I smoke. Usually they say they don't mind but in fact really would prefer me not to and this would remove this game. I have absolutely no problem with having to go to designated areas and if the balconies for smokers were all on one side of the ship I think that would eliminate a huge problem.

All the changes that Carnival made over the years you would think would have been satisfactory but it wasn't. Non smokers will continue with the effort to get thier way and will eventually. I don't mind not smoking in non smoking areas and have in fact put a cigarette out when the Lido deck was crowded and some non smokers sat on the smoking side because they couldn't find a table to sit at. I however refuse to be bothered in a smoking area by grown adults with thier fingers stuck up thier noses which by the way I would correct my grandchildren if they put thier fingers in thier noses,or the fake chokers and my favorite the hand waver.I like them pay for my vacation and will enjoy it.

Yes cigarettes are bad and do aggrevate some people with breathing problems. Do these same people that are bothered by smoke wear perfume because if they do they are part of the group that put a damper on my wifes last cruise when on elegant night she had to go back to the cabin because it irritated her breathing so bad. If you think I am incorrect on this next time you are at the your doctors ask if they let thier staff wear perfume....Just something to think about

Now we all know why people start these threads but nothing is ever done about them. Oh and just something else to think about 4 very good friends of mine just cancelled out on thier first cruise because of what they have read here in CRUISE CRITIC. After seeing how hateful people can be on these boards at times they have decided that they were not going to take a chance on having thier first vacation in 6 years ruined by a group such as some of the cruise critic ambassadors.

So I would just like to say thanks to some of you and I think you can figure out who I am talking about. I watched these 4 wonderful people struggle for the last years as thier daughter/granddaughter slipped away. They really did deserve and need this cruise. Now go ahead and flame me,ban me or whatever else you want to do

The problem is 2nd hand perfume doesn't kill, but 2nd hand smoke does as proven fact. Very bad analogy.

The do gooders will win and then they will wonder why their rights are taken away some day.

There it is in a nutshell. Little bit by little bit individual rights are taken away, until one day you won't be able to do anything.

I smoke, I control myself when and where I smoke and I am always considerate of others and will, without a confrontation, extinguish my cigarette if it is bothering someone. Unfortunately, you have people who have no spine and cannot ask the person to pt out the cigarette and therefore hide behind rule and regulations to have 'The Man' do it for them.

Oh and to the person who said second hand perfume smell cannot kill, it sure can if the person is sensitive or allergic to the chemicals used in the perfume it will send a person to the hospital alot quicker then second hand smoke, believe me.

That's just awful. Did they not know that the food & activities were free? Were they handicapped? I feel most sorry for them - spending the entire cruise in their cabin.

I had two cruises booked with Celebrity when they announced the change to their smoking policy. Their new restrictions would have negitively impacted my enjoyment of my cruise.

So quess what! I cancelled both cruises and told them why. Then I rebooked balcony cabins on Carnival and told them why.

I chose the line that seemed to suite my preferences the best. Everyone here has the right to do the same.

Those who continue to consistantly book "smoker friendly" ships and continue to consistantly have their entire trip totally ruined by the smokers aren't using very good judgement.

This is really wonderful of you to ask, thanks!!! It really hasn't been too much of a problem for us on our balconies. Of course we always seem to be down-wind!! LOL But, there was one time, it was just awful. I guess the entire group always ended up on our neighbors balcony, and there was LOTS of smoking quite a bit of the time. It really did become so bad we couldn't use our balcony but just a few minutes at at time. We finally mustered up the courage to ask if we couldn't reach some sort of compromise for everyone....................they weren't the compromising kind. It was too bad that when we wanted to go outside we had to go up onto one of the other decks. Fortunetly we didn't find it coming into our room!! So, thanks again!

All I can tell you is talk to Carnival with your dollars instead of trying to hound your agenda onto people here that don't care and even if we did it's not our choice to make for you.

Support the ships bars buy some drinks (every day and every night)

Support the casinos play some table games and slots (everyday and more than 10.00 or 5 minuites) and if your ship has a smokefree casino night then show up and pack the place out that night. That will show Carnival that this is the direction to go with.

Book those Spa cabins that are smokefree and show Carnival this is what you prefer.

Come out in force with your dollars and show Carnival what you support.

Because until you start spending the money it take to get Carnival's attention your voices will never be heard to your satisfaction.

The sooner you learn that nothing in this world is free and there is a price to pay for every victory, the sooner you will start seeing more changes.

Don't except others to fight your battles for you so you can enjoy the victories for free.

See there is where you are totally incorrect. When a person has asthma they can be thrown into a terrible attack that can severly effect thier ability to breath leading in a worse case scenario to death. Please feel free to verify this with your local respitory doctor if you would care to. So the fact is it is a good analogy however since you are one that probably wears perfume and don't think about others around you it doesn't fit into your thinking process.

Also do you live in the middle of nowhere with no smog, smoke exhaust, dust ectect that is dangerouse to ones health?

You are right its only a opinion, never been proven.

Seriously? So it's only an opinion that the Surgeon General has on the health consequences of second-hand exposure to smoke, and not backed up by any research  And to the previous poster who has said that they would without hesitation butt out if someone asked him to - good on you! but what about when you do politely ask someone to "share" balcony time so they could both enjoy their time on it and that person tells you to f....off......what then? only the few lucky ones, who measure 6 feet and over and weigh over 200 lbs could deal with that one - the rest of us would have to back down in fear....

I'm all for smokers having their space to enjoy a cigarette/cigar in whatever location Carnival chooses and it's up to me not go into those areas, but to not be able to enjoy my balcony because of neighboring smokers - does not seem right to me.

So you contradict yourself the sentence after you say you have no problem with smokers smoking where Carnival allows them. Carnival allows smokers to smoke in their cabins and on their balconies. Period. So I call phoney baloney on your first sentence since your second sentence wants smokers NOT to smoke where they are allowed to.
