Looking at booking a cruise next Sept. and noticed this port on several schedules. Has anyone been here, is it under Italian rule (Italian spoken here) and what did you do there while in port? Thanks!

Kotor is not under the rule of Italy. Kotor is in Montenegro. There speak Serbo-Croatian or Montenegrin, not Italian

We went there in 2007. It's main attraction is it's setting, described as a "Mediterranean Fjord" with spectacular scenery sailing in and out. The town is a bit like a miniature Dubrovnik, we were happy to wander round/ eat/ drink/ shop, but hardier souls hiked up to the ruined fort on top of the hill (many, many steps!) for the great view.

There are boat trips to the tiny islets, and excursions to Budvar.

It's a gem of a port.

We just went on a cruise that went Kotor. It was a great stop. Here is part of my review.

Kotor was our next port and we arrived at the Bay of Kotor before sun up. There was a commentator on board from Montenegro who told us a lot about the country and it’s history while sailing in. The views were beautiful and the captain even circled the small islands with the churches on them. We were able to dock right near town and walked right off the ship. We walked through town to the trail leading up to the fort above town. It is a steep trail with several switchbacks. There are wonderful views from the top. After hiking down we walked around town. There is also a small beach within easy walking distance.

Here are my pictures:

We just recently returned from a cruise with a short stop in Kotor.

It is a beautiful walled medieval town. We walked around the town, then with another couple went by taxi to Budvar for 60 euro return tour.

Budvar is more upmarket but also very beautiful in an incredibly scenic setting.

It is being very quickly bought up and developed by the new Russian middle classes, so you should try to see as much as you can before it loses all of its character like so many other Mediterranean sea ports.
