Where to go for shopping in St. Thomas?

In addition to other activities while in St. Thomas, we plan to take a taxi to find some shopping in St. Thomas. However, we are not familiar with St. Thomas, so, where is it that we need to tell the taxi where to take us? Though, I suppose the taxi driver would know where to take us if we simply said "take us to some shopping," but to be better informed, I thought I'd ask here for the best source of information with where to go. Also, for the return back to the ship, are taxi readily available to take us back? Thanks for your help and information.

You will dock at either Havensight or Crown Bay. Either way you are only 5 or 10 minutes by taxi to downtown Charlotte Amalie. There is shopping at the ports (better at Havensight than Crown Bay) but you need to experience Charlotte Amalie to really experience St. Thomas.

Tons of taxis meet the cruise ships. It is $4 per person each way to go downtown. And the open air taxis cruise the streets all day long so it is easy to hop one for your return trip to the dock.

There are also several neat restaurants downtown where you can enjoy lunch.

We will be in St. Thomas for the 1st time next week and want to do Beach and Shopping. How Much would a Taxi be from Charlotte Amalie to a "Calm Clear Water" beach? And Vice Versa? Or does one have to go back to the dock and then cab to the beach? Just not looking to spend a fortune on Cabs as we have a few ports that will require cabs etc...

Also noy really looking for a "tour" as if we want to choose to beach it 2 or 5 hours or shop 2 or 4 hours we do not want to be confined to set times. but also not totally oppsed to a tour if that is the most $ friendly option?!?

Thanks for the help!
