Nassau - Hilton vs. Wyndham

Recommended Posts

I will be in Nassau during the 1st week in January on the Monarch.

I am looking to see which property is recommended. I have heard lots of good things about both places and would like to learn the pros and cons of each.

Thanks!

We're going to the Hilton.

It's close to the ship.

$50 entry fee includes $30 for food.

It's close to the ship.

It's quiet; not many kids.

It's close to the ship! :D

I stole this from another post regarding the Hilton:

Good Day,

Thank you for choosing The British Colonial Hilton.

We do have a pool and beach package available at $55 per person which is bookable at the front desk on arrival, alternatively you can also purchase the package online at http://www.bahamasexcursions.com at a cost of $50 per person with a 10% deposit per person at the time of booking.

Both packages include a $30 food and beverage element with access to the pool and beach and a towel. Kids ages 5 - 12 half price and under 5 are free with a special menu.

HHonors guests receive points for amounts as spent!

Looking forward to having you here with us.

Rgds,

Shamarize Lewis

Thanks Cigar Dude -- Now you bring me to another question based on your name - you have a favorite Cigar place in Nassau?

Only one really; Graycliff Hotel. They have the cigar factory in the rear of the complex and it's really cool to visit. Their cigars are quite pricey.

The Cubans in Nassau are fake for the most part. You can get real ones at Atlantis, I've heard; never been myself.

I'll visit Graycliff in the morning and head over to the Hilton to spend the rest of the day. ;)

Is it the Hilton that is also close to the Straw Market? Like close enough to walk?

The Hilton is definitely walkable from the cruise piers. Here's a recent pic I took from the Jewel leaving Nassau. The piers are on the left, the Hilton and its beach are on the extreme right. (Which also means the beach is in the harbor. The Sheraton and Wyndham beaches are not.) The straw market is the tent like building on the right (two bldgs over from the Hilton).

how does the beach compare to the Wyndham/Sheraton? I assume food voucer is 1 per family? Do kids eat free, or is it a special paid menu for them?

Wyndhams is $40 pp... under 3 are free.. otherwise everone in the family pays for a day pass and eats at the buffet.. wyndham is not a voucher.

The Hilton is a voucher, $50 pp/ 30 voucher .. voucher is per person.

Kids 4-12 are discounted, but i don't remember the price.. don't remember seeing a kids menu. It's mostly burgers, chicken fingers/ grouper, wraps and salads.. no hot dogs and mac and cheese.

(btw.. be careful of bahamian mac and cheese.. it's spicy.,)

Hi. I just want to ask if there is any beach we can use without paying. We are a family of four and really can't afford to pay $50 pp to go to the beach. Is there any beach that is safe that we can use? And how do you get to it? Thank you for any help you can give. You seem to be the girl to ask.

Andi

Scubagirrl - thank you. Since you are full of great information - now I am thinking the Sheraton vs. Wyndham might be better in order to get away from the port area. Can you provide any insight on which is a better property?

Thanks!

We went to the Sheraton in January and loved it. We paid 25.00 per person for the day pass and were able to enjoy the facilities, pool area and beach. The pool was heaven :) The bar area and lunch were decent as well. Not sure if you have children but it was quiet at the hotel and I would think children would get bored (JMO)

We were thinking of going back this January on our Freedom cruise but we do not get into port until noon....

Is the water clean for swimming at the Hilton beach? Just wondering since it is in the same area as the cruise ships.

Also - about how much is the cab ride to the Sheraton?

Thanks!

Gosh - I am not 100% certain but I think we paid about 15.00 for the trip to the Sheraton

Ditto. Very easy to do, and cheap. And you're getting a little of the local experience as well.

(The cab fares are posted in the terminal building as you exit. IIRC, it was $15 for the first passenger, $3 for each additional passenger, each way.)

What's the BIGGEST difference between Hilton and Sheraton/Wyndam? I know the Hilton is in the bay but I haven't seen pics of the S/W beach to know if it's worth the travel time? We are just looking to chill and not really needing snorkeling or beach services. But if the view or something else justifies the travel time to S/W vs the closeness of the Hilton I'd love to hear about it.

Seems to me the day passes for all are about the same with food vouchers. Anyone have preferences on who has the best cocktails and prices?:)

We were looking for a relaxed environment and that is exactly what we got at Sheraton (few kids, no crowds). The Hilton is very busy and is right at the end of the Market, where everyone walks, its basically downtown.

The drive out to Sheraton was nice, only about 10 minutes and once you got to the Sheraton you felt relaxed. The hotel was beautiful, has a casino (DH tried his luck) and the pool area was perfect. Drinks and lunch were decent , the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The beach area was nice and clean (I do not like the beach area near the Hilton), we took a stroll on the beach and stuck our toes in the water.

To me the Sheraton was an experience and the Hilton would be just a day at a hotel.....if that makes any sense ;)

hilton water is crystal clear.. the harbour is open at that point and it doesn't get affected by the ships.

sheraton is more open, with a reef protecting it from the heavy surf.

We were at the Hilton on Nov 22. I choose it because it was close to the ship, and I was a little worried about being too far away. It was a short walk past the straw market. We walked up to guest services, and they gave us our passes. We were the only ones on the beach for a couple of hours. The water was beautiful but chilly even for my kids. We finally saw 3 more kids come, but that was it. We food was good. A chicken finger plates was $14, hamburger was $15 and sodas were $3 each. There was not a kids menu so they had to order off the regular menu. Which their voucher was only for $15. We did enjoy our visit and we knew that it was small and quite before we went. Next time though we will visit a resort with a slide, and more activities.

My husband & I did the British Hilton back in May. The beach is small, and yes, the cruise ships are pretty close. The water is still absolutely beautiful. There were some tiki huts, umbrellas and beach chairs. We pretty much stayed at the pool, and close to the bar. Towels are provided. All in all, there weren't many people there, it was a very quiet day and nice to relax. Definitely worth the $50 pp
