Early disembarking

We are taking a TA in May which ends in Civitavecchia. However, the day before the cruise is in Livorno. Does anyone know if it is possible to disembark in Livorno and what steps you need to take to do so?We want to rent a car to go north and I think Livorno will have a better supply of automatic shift cars than Civitavecchia.

We rented a car in Civitavecchia last May, through www.kemwel.com (love them). We had no problem getting an automatic car. (The car was a Passat diesel, and it only cost us $50 dollars for gas for 5 days, including the drive down to Sorrento, Positano and points south on the Amalfi Coast.)

The car agency picked us up outside the port gates at Civitavecchia, but the rental agency was actually just a few blocks away...we could have walked. Great car, great prices, great trip to the Amalfi Coast. Great stop at the Rome factory outlets on the way back to the Rome airport. :p

I expect that what is more important is where you want to go after you pick up the car, and where you want to return the car. We were flying out of Rome (Leonardo da Vinci airport, Fiumicino) and had no trouble dropping our rental car off at the airport, and there was no extra drop-off fee.

You have to get a written OK from the cruise line as they would have to make special arrangements for Italian Customs and Immigration to clear you. But just as Elena said, we've never had a problem getting an automatic car in Civi.
