eandj Posted January 4, 2011 #1 Share Posted January 4, 2011 On a map the "dungeons" market place appears to be in the walled city. Easily walkable if visitng the old town? Can't determine how big and area the walled old city is.
drew sailbum Posted January 4, 2011 #2 Share Posted January 4, 2011 Las Bovedas ("The Dungeons") are a series of about twenty shops which are actually built right into the base of the city wall. They are more or less at the northwest end of the walled city. For what it is worth i found most of the prices in these shops to be quite high compared to local shops elsewhere in the walled city. You would probably need a map to find your way between the various tourist sites within the walled city. It is walkable, though sidewalks can be very narrow in places. eandj Posted January 4, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted January 4, 2011 Thanks. Trying to find a detailed map of the city.
GTJ Posted January 4, 2011 #4 Share Posted January 4, 2011 I think the best detailed map of the entire city is the one published by Cartur, http://www.mapascartur.com. I see it being available in the United States from Great Journeys, Inc. for $22.95, plus $3.50 shipping. http://www.maps2anywhere.com. It may also be available form other vendors, and it is much less expensive to purchase locally within Columbia.
Mercruiser Posted January 7, 2011 #5 Share Posted January 7, 2011 The "Cartagena D Indias" maps towards the bottom of this web page can be downloaded and printed out: http://mercruiser.wordpress.com/itinerary/cartagena/ I think these are available at the cruise ship terminal in Cartagena (note the overview maps says "Cruises Terminal (You are here)". But, you might want to print them out and take them with you on the cruise, just in case they run out. For an outline of the Old Town, see the Google Map on this same web page. The Old Town is about 3/4 mile on it's longest dimension (from the Dungeons to the Marina).
eandj Posted January 7, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted January 7, 2011 This is very helpful. Just what I needed to print out ahead of time. Thanks, Mercruiser !!!
dwick Posted January 10, 2011 #7 Share Posted January 10, 2011 These blue maps are available for free at any of the tourism kiosks. There is one on the pier as you get off the ship and also there are a couple of them in the Old City. There is a free shuttle bus from the ship's pier to the crusie terminal where you can get taxis to the Old City. You can easily walk to all of the different sites in the Old City. From one end to the other is about 30 minutes but half the fun is all of the sites and people along the way. Enjoy your visit. We live here and it's great!
