Stateroom on guarantee

I have just booked a stateroom on guarentee on the Ventura. Which means (I think) that our room will be allocated shortly before the cruise and we will be guaranteed a room at the level we paid or above. Has one done this before? Was it worth the gamble?

We had our cabin on guarantee for our last cruise on Oceana. No other choice as that was all that was available in the type of cabin we wanted.

Our allocated cabins were fine - we got them about 2 months before our cruise. We were in exactly the grade of cabin we should have been - so no upgrade.

It is a bit of a gamble as you can't pick your cabin so you get what you're given. But ours were fine.

We booked a guarantee Superior balcony last week and we checked a couple of days ago and had an allocation (D222).

Is it just the guarantee staterooms that are upgraded as we have chosen a cabin but also agreed to upgrade? How do they work and who gets upgraded first? Or is it just pot luck. We are on Ventura.

I've had a guarantee cabin a few times now, but the best upgrades have been on the big ships - Ventura and Azura.
