NCL Star suites options SC vs SJ

we are just back from a Star cruise to the Mex Riv and are eager to book one for summer to AK.

 

We are choosing between an SJ (the brand new "family suite") or an SC (the older, 2-bedroom "family penthouse").

 

The SC is about 1500 more, but offers a true private bedroom for us grownups, and a balcony.

 

How useful is a space split into separate rooms? Our kids will be 5, 9 & 9 so it'll be packed in the little 2nd bedroom in the SC but they will have their own bathroom.
