Eating and excursions...

Okay, we are booked for the Dune Buggy excursion through Carnival for next week. It is supposed to be from 10:30am until 2 pm. All that is provided is light snacks (nachos) and soft drinks/water. I am worried that we will be STARVING by the time we get back to the ship, and then I really want to go shop/eat at a local restaurant. Since we are taking a ship excursion, and they return us to the port at 2 pm, is that enough time for us to hop on a cab, go back into town for some shopping/eating? We leave Costa Maya at 6 pm, so I know we will only have a couple of hours....what do you guys think that have been there/done that? Any advice? Should we take our own snacks on the excursion?

Thanks!

Some ports will not allow you to take food off the ship except prepackaged food like cereal. Read the cruiselines daily paper and it will state on the front page if food is not allowed off.
