Altun Ha or Lamani?

haven't been to any but lamanai, but it's so amazing. the one thing that makes it different is there are no crowds...only a couple of ship tours and a couple of private tours. we never saw the other ship tour, we followed them on the boats, they did lunch first, we toured first....it made it seem like we had the whole place to ourselves. lamanai is about as "untouched" as you can get in this modern times.

Lamanai is my pick. It is a much bigger site and half the adventure is getting there. A boat ride up the New river where crocodiles, iguanas and all sorts of bird life will be spotted. At the ruins site there is a chance of encountering howler monkeys.

It is a much longer trip and based on that I would recommend a ship excursion, just in case.

Definitely go to Lamanai.

The ruins at Altun Ha are very limited compared to what you will see at Lamanai and the drive is pretty desolate. The roads to Altun Ha were in terrible disrepair when we went in 2007. I was very ill with motion sickness because the road (once you turn off the Northern Hwy) was reduced to a single lane road due to erosion. If a tour bus approached us head on, we would have to pull off the road to allow them to pass. Not a good drive at all.

However the trip to Lamanai was wonderful....nice bus ride to the docks, great boat ride to the site, lush and green, and simply beautiful. We were even privy to a family of howler monkeys who had taken up nesting in the trees near the dining area.
