Canary Islands on Independence of the Seas

Hi Everyone,

I will be on the 4 May sailing of the Independence of the Seas and this will be the first in a long time where all of the ports are new to me.

It may have been shared elsewhere but I'd love to know what the "must see" thing(s) to do are in each port.

  • Funchal (Madeira), Portugal
  • Tenerife
  • Las Palmas
  • Lanzarote
  • Vigo, Spain

If there is an existing thread on this, that would be helpful!

Thanks.

We will be visiting the same ports in November, 2011. Can you please share what you found of interest in these ports?

Any suggestions for private tours?

Thanks

Lorraine

There will be stacks of previous threads on these places.

Simplest way of accessing them:

Immediately above your question, click on "search this thread" & in the drop-down type the name of a port or island.

This will bring up all previous questions on this "Spain" forum about that place.

Switch to a different suitable forum by using the "forum jump" at the bottom of this page (mebbe to "other Mediterranean" or "ask a cruise question") and do the same.

You can do the same by clicking on "search" in the page-wide brown toolbar at the top of this page, hit "advanced search", type in a keyword & select the relevant forums You'll need to hold down your "control" key while you select the forums. If you dont select which forums, your search will be overloaded with irrelevant roll-call posts.

Here's an example of using that facility for "Madeira"

Hello Shipcafe & Lorraine

I can only comment on Tenerife, Lanzarote and and Madeira, having been there many times but never from a cruise. It all depends on your party's wishes and the intensity of the other ports. If you need a beach day I'd do that at Tenerife. It's not there's nothing there to see :

Mount Teide

The Loro Parque

but Tenerife does not compare with Lanzarote for scenic beauty, where you can see the Cesar Manrique Foundation, named after the man who decreed there can be no high-rise buildings on Lanzarote. Also worth considering is Timanfaya National Park which is entirely volcanic and has a surface like the moon's (apparently, I've not been to the moon :))

Great beaches on Lanz too, and there is also terrific underground cave there.

As for Funchal, that's a properly interesting place to walk around

and it's about a 10 minute walk tomthe town centre from the pier where cruise ships dock. In that video there is the merest glimpse of a cruise ship from the cable car back from Monte.

All the best, Tony

cruise enthusiast, but techno-dummy

Grrrrrrrr............. I GIVE UP

The link worked when I checked it immediately after posting.:)

But presumably times-out.

So you'll just have to do it step-by-step. Or keep it simple & search forum-by-forum

JB

techno-dumbness confirmed
