Can you buy excursions with shipboard credit?

Hi -- a traveling companion has told us that he was told that we cannot use our shipboard credit to pay for any Windsurf excursions. Is that true? I understand we also cannot use it for gratuities. What is it used for, then, besides wine and liquor? Thanks for info --

We got our bill at the end, and it had everything on it...excursions, drinks, tip, laundry etc. Then our shipboard credit was deducted at the bottom. So I think it applies to everything!

Thanks for your reply, Little Nat. I called Windstar and found that I can use the shipboard credit for anything onboard, but it will not pay for anything I book ahead on line. As she told me, that's why it's called "shipboard." Duh! It makes sense, but I'm not thrilled about it as I would have liked to do the shore excursions now.
