Widespreadpanic Posted March 1, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 1, 2011 Just read a post on Christopher Elliott's FB page that said if you are booked and paid in full on a cruise, TICO (a consumer protection law, I guess) prevents the cruiseline from raising the rate, including raises due to "fuel adjustments". I was wondering if this is true, and what you can tell me about it? Thanks!
toberman Posted March 1, 2011 #2 Share Posted March 1, 2011 TICO - Travel Industry Council of Ontario (not Canada) Has nothing to do with what a tour operator can charge - but rather, covers us if the TA, tour company, airline, or cruiseline goes out of business. Here's the website http://www.tico.ca/consumer-info/compensation-fund.html
firefly333 Posted March 1, 2011 #3 Share Posted March 1, 2011 I think Canada was covered in the last instance of fuel surcharges, but I would think since the contracts have been ameneded, the legal depts got it covered now. You agreed they could add it whenever they wanted.
Widespreadpanic Posted March 2, 2011 Author #4 Share Posted March 2, 2011 Thanks, it seemed too consumer-friendly to be true (at least for long). I guess there are lobbyists in CA too, eh?
DanJ Posted March 2, 2011 #5 Share Posted March 2, 2011 3 years or so ago when fuel supplements were going on, we got out of them because of the law about adding fees after a contract was signed. It didn't have to be after final payment. After deposit was fine. Now, the contract says they can add the fuel supplements avfter booking or after final payment, basically whenever. We agree when we book, so that's that.
