Anyone rent a car and just go?

My husband and I are cruising to Belize in May and I was wondering if it is safe to rent a car and just go out on your own? I have heard rumors that Belize is unsafe. Is this true?

It is a very poor country and lots of poor people just hanging out all over the city. The police try to make sure that the tourists are not bothered but they can't be everywhere. Renting a car and striking out on your own is just asking for trouble. Once we bought a tour of Belize city (with two other couples) for about $20/person that lasted about 2 hours. We felt that was safe.
