Passport AND Birth Certificate?

In July we will be going on our first cruise with our son. He will be under 1 year old. Have a question for you guys. We have applied for a passport for our son, last week. If we just use his passport for his ID, do we have to bring his birth certificate?

I don't want to bring his birth certificate if I can help it.

Thanks in advance.

Nope, passport is all you need. And for your next question:

Q:My child is too young to sign his/her own passport. How do I sign my child's passport?

a:In the space provided for the signature, the mother or father must print the child's name and sign their own name. Then, in parenthesis by the parent's name, write the word (mother) or (father) so we know who signed for the child.

From http://travel.state.gov/passport/faq/faq_1741.html.

I just bring passports, they are more reliable travel documents versus a BC because of the photo and security features. Plus if we lost the passport, the BC would likely be gone too as we keep all the valuables in the safe.

I take the BC number with me, but leave the original at home where our emergency contacts can get to it easily.

Interestingly, us Canadians leave the child's signature area blank ;)

We only needed DS' passport, but because I have a different last name I did bring his long form birth certificate that lists us both as his parents just in case some crazy situation happened.
