Cash instead or Card

Hello all. We are going cruising next weekend! Can't wait. I read that you can set up an onboard account with cash instead of having to use credit card. Is this true? And if it is how and when do you set this up? Can you add more money during the cruise if needed? Thanks B

If I remeber from from my cruise back in 2002, you can not set up a cash account. You need to set it up with a credit card, but you have the option to pay for your tab at the end by cash and not put it on your credit card. But then again, my memory is not the greatest.

We've set ours up with a credit card and brought traveler's checks to pay it off the next to last day. We keep the cash for tips for shore excursions (guides, drivers, food, etc) and tips around the ship (room service,etc.).

This is from the info in my documents for the Dream cruise next week:

For your convenience, all shipboard expenses are charged to NCL's special onboard credit program. Sign up on the first day of your cruise, by establishing your method of payment with Visa®, MasterCard®, American Express®, Discover®, travelers checks or cash. If you choose to settle your account with cash, a deposit will be required in advance. You may also use your debit card; however, please be advised that NCL obtains pre-authorization which some banks may hold for up to 30 days

On my NCL cruise last November, when we they were checking out tickets, passports, etc, they asked what card we would be using for a down payment. I told them we were paying cash for our down payment. We then got into another line (only 2 people were in front of me) where we paid $500 in Traveler's Checks ($250 pp). We then added another $300 mid week. The morning of disembarkment, we had to go to the purseres desk between 6:30-8:30 am and receive our refund.

Just keep in mind that those who used their credit card did not have to do anything that monring.

wheni was on the dawn for the 2-20-05 sailing. once you got into the pre-boarding area, they have several lines for "CAsh Deposits" . We used a credit card, so i can't give you any more specifics. some form of payment (deposit) must be made prior to being issues your shipboard room key and charge card.

we have two son's who stayed in their own room as well, however their room charges were added to our bill. everytime you go to use your card on the ship, they slide it through a card reader and will see a picture if the person using the card. so if the card is lost or stolen, charges can't be made to your room.

no matter what form of payment you use prior to boarding, you can always make additional payments during the week i.e. you win in the casino and want to apply it to your shipboard account.

hope this helps
