What happens when 1 of 3 cancels

It depends on how you split the cost to begin with. For example, maybe the the total room cost was $3500 broken down as (let's assume final payment has been made and you'll be in the 100% penalty period):

 

Passenger 1: $1500

Passenger 2: $1500

Passenger 3: $500

 

If the $3500 was just divided three ways and each person paid $1167 then this is what will happen:

 

The canceling passenger will file a claim for what he/she is actually losing -- in this case $1167.

 

The cruise line already has all their money so nothing more is due from the two remaining passengers.

 

But perhaps the cancellation occurs after the deposit has been made but before the penalties go to 100%. What happens next depends on the insurer. The two remaining passengers thought they were only going to have to pay $1167 but now they each have to pay $1500.

 

If they have purchased a policy with an "occupancy adjustment" benefit that $333 can be reimbursed though the insurance. Here's one example from TravelSafe:

 

"Benefits will be paid, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount, for the additional cost incurred as a result of a change in the per person occupancy rate for prepaid Travel Arrangements if Your Family Member or Your Traveling Companion has his/her Trip delayed, canceled or interrupted for a covered reason and You do not cancel. "

 

So the canceling passenger claims on his/her insurance any amount not refunded by the cruise line and the remaining passengers file a claim with their insurers for the additional amount they now have to pay because of that cancellation.

 

Not all insurers offer this benefit so be sure to check with yours to see how they would handle it.
