2 Adults and 1 baby

There are good prices being quoted for cruises sailing from the UK at the moment but if you want to take a baby they go through the roof.

The baby is well under a year old and would be most comfortable in his usual travel cot and eating his usual baby food, which could both be taken for him.

A couple of questions

1. Presumably even though he wouldn't need a bed the booking couldn't be for a double cabin with his cot in the seating area?

2. Which cruise lines provide the most economical prices when a small baby is in the party?

Thanks for any suggestions.

In answer to question 1

One of the reasons are for Healthy and Safety purposes. The ship is geared and permitted to take x number of passengers. Whether your baby is 6 months, 6 years, 16 years etc it still is considered to be "a person" and consequently is included in any head-count. Furthermore, each deck will only be allowed to have x amount of passengers in it for safety reasons.

We have maybe found a solution. P&O only charge a fuel supplement for babies 6 months to 2 years. The baby must be booked as an additional passenger in a cabin accommodating more than 2 people (that is many of those that usually only book for 2 people). Different costs are given when the age of the third passenger is specified (baby, child or adult). We found that many booking agents were not aware of how to book a baby in this way. It was only after contacting P&O that we were given a quotation using this method.

Hope it may help others in the same situation.

HOWEVER, in the latest Summertime Sailings brochure just received P&O's quoted 'savings' for multiple occupancy give charges of between £199 and £399 for a baby, depending on cruise. Seems that a price rise is being smuggled in in the guise of a saving. Or have I got it wrong?

Some information in my last post had an inaccuracy as some cruises (peak season?) do not offer the low baby rates. I've check with the agent again and, by coincidence, the cruises for which we have been quoted all offered low cost rates but I guess cruises in the Summertime brochure don't.
