Ship Activities for "Not-so-Single" Moms (Sensation)?

Hi everyone,

My kids (13 y.o. daughter, 10 y.o. son) and I are going on our 1st cruise in April. We're from California but will be cruising on the Sensation out of New Orleans. Hubby is not going (we're the guinea pigs... if we love it, we'll convince him to go next time).

Soooo... I have a feeling my kids will love Camp Carnival and I will be solo a good bit of the time (except for dinner, which I have told them will be our "together" time). What ship activities would be good for me to attend, seeing that I'm looking to have fun, but I obviously don't want to be in the single's scene? I'm mid-40s, by the way.

We do have shore excurisions booked, but I'm wondering what I should gear up for on the ship. I will bring a book to read, etc... but would prefer activities over lounging around. I'm not a big drinker by the way, but will certainly have a few cocktails along the way.

Also, for dinner seating, I think I'll ask to be seated near other "single" parents traveling with kids... I guess I will have to wait until we're on board to do that?

Thanks for any advice!!

Carole

Well there is always the casino- plenty to do thre.

Also each day, check your capers- there will a list of activites and the times= there are trivia games, pool games tea time and the ever present bingo games.

I'm sure you'll find something to do!

Thanks iluvdoxies.

I forgot to mention I am not a casino person at all. But I will definitely read the Capers to see what's going on! I keep seeing things like "the Newlywed Game" mentioned as a fun thing... but that one doeesn't sound like one for me this go around! Just wanted to make sure there will be something for us married, but traveling without our spouses, singles.

You don't have to be with a spouse to watch the Newlywed Game... it's funny but doesn't require one to be married to enjoy it. There are plenty of things to do. It's not a "singles" cruise and alot of people travel without their spouses, you will find lots of things to do! Have fun!

Hi Carole, I'm kind of in the same boat as you are...pun intended. I'll be cruising alone with my 14 year old son in May. I am single though. I would love to hook up with some other solo mom's and dad's on our cruise too. My plan is to let my son go do his own thing. He is very outgoing and makes friends easily so I know he'll be hooked up with his own little posse in no time. We'll check out Camp Carnival our first night aboard. I also like to stay busy, so I'll work out every morning and on our out at sea days I'll find stuff to do in Capers. I plan to eat a lot as well :D

Carole,

Have you gone and checked yet to see if there is a thread for your particular cruise yet? If there is you can always start talking to people on it and get to know what their travel situations are. I know that if I were on a cruise by myself I'd be able to find tons of stuff to do. Spa, food, pool, reading, bingo, art shows, lectures, etc. You won't be bored or lonely.

Carole, I've done this before. My daughter and I have gone cruising while my husband and son were at scout camp.

Like you, I'm not into the casino thing and am not a big drinker. I went to several of the trivia games, toured the galley, watched the ice carving, and definitately watched the Newlywed-not-so-newlywed game. I did have a book to read. As my daughter played with her new friends, I'd hang out on deck reading. Very relaxing!

We'll be doing this in July again, except my mother and aunt are going with us. Good luck. I hope it all goes well.

Carole, as mentioned before, use this thread to meet fellow cruisers. You will get a feel for them on the boards, and then meet them at a meet and greet on the ship the first day. You will be surprised, we(CC's) have often gone as a group to shows,to excursions, and meals. Also , as you are sitting around the ship, they pass by and off you go to something. Bring a good book and enjoy the quiet times, and I know you will have a great time. I leave in three weeks on the Spirit and my kids,13 and 15, and DH are staying home, and I am meeting up with my dad and brother. I have a couple of books, and some wine, and I plan to relax on the balcony. And if you are at a large table, you will get to know those people too. Have a great cruise
