cherski Posted April 24, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 24, 2004 We'll be on The Millenium for a Mediterranean cruise in October. Will dance lessons be available? What kind of dances do they teach? Do they also offer private lessons? Let's hope my husband does not read this until it's too late to back out! Thanks, Cher

Cindy G Posted April 25, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 25, 2004 We just got off the Zenith last Thurs., There were dance classes in the afternoon each sea day. They were excellent and great fun.
hajekfam Posted April 25, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 25, 2004 The dance lessons are taught by the Celebrity dancers who are not really ballroom dancers. I was on the Century and went down to see the lessons. They were teaching salsa to merengue music and merengue timing. I wish Celebrity would bring back the professional teachers. On all our cruises since they stopped having professional ballroom instructors, we have noticed that the ballroom lessons are inaccurate. (Hubby and I have been taking ballroom lessons for several years now and enjoy dancing. We usually are the first couple on the floor of the Rendez-vous lounge on the first night and are the last couple to leave on the last night.) cherski Posted April 26, 2004 Author #8 Share Posted April 26, 2004 Thanks all. It looks like we should try to learn on our own ahead of time, just to be on the safe side. So, if you could only get your husband to learn one dance (he's the immovable object), what would it be? I'm now looking for suggestions for the one dance style that would have us on the floor of the Rendevous Lounge the most. Thanks, Cher
hajekfam Posted April 26, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 26, 2004 Cher- Fox trot is played the most on both Celebrity ships and ballrooms followed by swing. Next in number would be rumbas and cha chas, followed by waltzes. They would play a few tangos. They would do mambos (or salsa) and sambas and merengues upon request. The mix depended upon the number and type of dancers that were in the lounge. We requested a couple of boleros and they even did a paso doble for hubby and me each night during the after the late seating set. Most men enjoy learning tango - I think it's a macho thing. Our dance instructor tells husbands that dancing is the one time the woman has no say and has to do what he wants us to do as the man leads and the worman follows. That usually helps men get over the "immovable" stage Zenith-Western Caribbean-6/92 Zenith-Eastern Caribbean-6/93 Century-Maiden Voyage-12/95 Galaxy-Southern Caribbean-11/99 Mercury-Northbound Alaska-6/00 Millennium-Westbound Transatlantic-9/01 Horizon-Western Caribbean - Adults only cruise-11/02 Millennium-Westbound Transatlantic 10/26/03 Century - Western Caribbean 1/31/
cherski Posted April 27, 2004 Author #10 Share Posted April 27, 2004 hajekfam - Thanks so much for your information. Too bad that you won't be on the same cruise (so that Mom and I could borrow your partner in a dance crisis). So if i pull out my shotgun and put in the dance video in the VCR, Chuck will just have to learn the fox trot and the swing and we should be out there a lot??? The tango seems like it would be wonderful ... especially after seeing Scent of a Woman. But, I'm not sure that I want the other half to feel that powerful. wieslaw Posted April 27, 2004 #11 Share Posted April 27, 2004 Hi Cher, If You like dancing and can not 'drag' your partner to the dance floor, take advantage of the 'dance partners' provided by Celebrity. These gentleman are usaually pretty good dancers and that is what they provide...dancing. There were two of them on the Panama Canal cruise and they made many ladies who wanted to dance very happy. hajekfam Posted April 27, 2004 #12 Share Posted April 27, 2004 We got to talk to quite a few of the dance hosts. If you want to dance with them, leave hubby in the room or casino. They can only dance with unescorted (unaccompanied) women. frequenttraveler Posted April 29, 2004 #13 Share Posted April 29, 2004 We were on the Summit a few years ago. They had actual dance teachers on board. We had a ball. We learned swing dancing.
