willcodeforfun Posted June 5, 2011 #76 Share Posted June 5, 2011 I really hope your trip will be just fine, 49er. Okay, I asked above whether there was any website to monitor water levels on the Rhine, and I have found one in English. For anyone else who is as preoccupied with this as me... the website is http://www.bafg.de/cln_033/nn_178640/EN/06__Info__Service/01__WaterLevels/waterlevels__node.html?__nnn=true It shows the rivers in Germany with colored dots, red being bad, green being good. Right now the Rhine is almost all orange (lowest end of the yellow before it gets to red) with one red spot that seems to be a mistake in measurement, and one greenish yellow at Konstanz. Since we have to make the decision on Thursday whether we are cancelling or not, we will combine the weather forecast with another look at these water level readings, since we can see from bree28's website that the SS Antoinette can go along the Rhine with the water levels like this. Anyone who's not a data fiend can look away now!, but since I wrote down all the water levels along the Rhine I'm going to share them here for future reference: all readings in cm: Readings Sunday 6/5, with SS Antoinette going with no problem: Emmerich: 101 cm Rees: 152 cm Wesel: 211 cm Ruhrort: 278 cm Dusseldorf: 146 cm Koln: 189 Bonn: 191 Oberwinter: 117 Andernach: 141 Koblenz: 121 Kaub: 117 Bingen: 130 Mainz: 213 Worms: 106 Speyer: 281 Maxau: 413 Plittersdorf: 337 Kehl-Kronenhof: 208 Rheinfelden: no measurement Konstanz: 309 Hope this helps someone else... even if the only way it helps is that you are glad you're not as obsessive as I am!! euro cruiser Posted June 6, 2011 #78 Share Posted June 6, 2011 We transitioned from the Mosel to the Rhine yesterday and have had no problem with the water level. Our cruise manager did point out how low the water level is, and how they are seeing rocks, etc., that they normally do not, but we are cruising (as are dozens of other boats) easily. willcodeforfun Posted June 6, 2011 #80 Share Posted June 6, 2011 Yes, thanks, euro_cruiser! So glad to hear it! The 10-day forecast for the whole area shows only a few days expected to be dry and hot, mostly cloudy to rainy, so I'm feeling pretty hopeful! euro cruiser Posted June 8, 2011 #81 Share Posted June 8, 2011 Raining in Koln (Cologne) today. Not so good for us who are touring, but overall good news for the river.
euro cruiser Posted June 8, 2011 #82 Share Posted June 8, 2011 As it turned out, not so much rain today after all. However, there is a lot of passenger and cargo traffic on the Rhine, so how bad could it be?
shelbyz Posted June 9, 2011 #83 Share Posted June 9, 2011 We finished our Rhine cruise Saturday on Avalon and had no problems at all.
willcodeforfun Posted June 9, 2011 #84 Share Posted June 9, 2011 Good to know, shelbyz! We had to decide about cancelling by today, and we have decided to take the plunge and risk it! I'll certainly be back with a review of the SS Antoinette.

nancycoop1 Posted June 10, 2011 #86 Share Posted June 10, 2011 So glad you decided to go on the river cruise. We will be following you on June 23rd. Have a great trip and keep the water levels up for us.
zibelius Posted June 11, 2011 #87 Share Posted June 11, 2011 We have had a bad experience with the Rhine Water Levels issue. We were not told anything in advance by the River Cruise Line the compaany we booked with and arrived at the boat (Lady Anne ) to find nearly all the cruise had been abandoned and we had a very poor alternative itinerary (tied up in dreary Mid Germany most of the time) instead of travelling to France and Switzerland. I am very interested in any one that has experienced any problems with this cruise and boat in May of this year 2011. Please contact me.

We could have walked up and down the Rhine faster than we were "cruising". The only limited consolation was that the weather was good but not much help for the water levels! What date did you sail? euro cruiser Posted June 11, 2011 #89 Share Posted June 11, 2011 We finished our Rhine cruise yesterday and had no issues at all with water level. We also saw many other river cruise ships along the way, so I'm thinking that it's important to choose your line and ship carefully.
nbern Posted June 12, 2011 #90 Share Posted June 12, 2011 Does anyone have info on the Danube River levels? We are planning a river boat trip in late July Thanks
pelicanron Posted June 13, 2011 #91 Share Posted June 13, 2011 Check out accu-weather-Europe and you'll see lots of rain over next 2 weeks. Good for rivers but maybe not so good for touring !
phonequeen Posted June 14, 2011 #92 Share Posted June 14, 2011 We are first time river cruisers on Avalon Panorama going July 13 from Amsterdam to Budapest. Haven't seen any reviews from passengers on this new ship yet. Realize it hasn't made very many trips yet but still though I would see something. Appreciate hearing about water levels, keep us posted. Thanks
shoshona2 Posted June 14, 2011 #93 Share Posted June 14, 2011 Hi Phone Queen, Welcome to this wonderful Cruise Critic Board! If you will go back to "River and Canal Cruises" and hit on the Search Mode, you will find a review by "Benjzmom" dated June 3, 2011. Put "Avalon Panorama" in the Search Mode. She loved the cruise and the ship. Sheila
phonequeen Posted June 17, 2011 #94 Share Posted June 17, 2011 Thanks for the info. Just found her review. I am new to these message boards and having trouble navigating around. Seems like you have to check so many places. Is it me or are the tips a little out of line? I do big cruise ships and know that it is only about 11 us a day. Paying 15Euro a day is quite a bit more and makes our two week cruise very expensive. Hopefully once I do the river cruise I will feel it is warrented but right now seems pricey. I thought Europeans didn't expect tips unless it is for an exceptional service.
zibelius Posted June 29, 2011 #95 Share Posted June 29, 2011 Yes we were on that sailing (?) as well. We have put in a strong letter of complaint but as yet no reply. Will be looking for a specialist holiday claims solicitor soon if River Cruise Line do not respond. Hi - We were on the Lady Anne sailing from Andernach on 20/05/2011. zibelius Posted June 29, 2011 #96 Share Posted June 29, 2011 Yes you are right about that. We certainly chose the wrong company. We still a month later have had no satisfactory explanation or recompence for a travesty of what we actually paid for. We finished our Rhine cruise yesterday and had no issues at all with water level. willcodeforfun Posted July 3, 2011 #97 Share Posted July 3, 2011 I'm sorry, freefromwork and zibelius, wishing you better luck in future. I've posted a review of Uniworld's Rhine trip from Amsterdam to Basel on the S.S. Antoinette: http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=85201 So many thanks to everyone who helped us figure out that it was fine to go. It was a heavenly trip and we had a wonderful time! Fingers crossed for everyone who is getting ready to cruise, that the water levels continue to be adequate! Glad to hear the Antoinette was nice and hope our ship, the River Princess, will be likewise. A few years ago our son did a "Study Abroad" for three months in Strasbourg. He loved that city as do we. Glad you had a great trip and the rivers were flowing:-) Time to start planning your next voyage. We will be heading across the pond in a little over 6 weeks. Can hardly wait! 49er
