The Atlantic, FLL - review

I stayed recently at the Atlantic in Ft. Lauderdale using Starwood points prior to our cruise. While the hotel was nice and right across the street from the beach, I wouldn't stay there again, especially not for a pre-cruise night.

I had booked a 2 queen bed room for me, DW, and DS and we got put in a single king bed room. Front desk said not a word to us as we checked in despite seeing all three of us standing there and knowing we were not all going to sleep in a king bed. They left this to the bellman. They said the hotel was full and the only thing they could do was bring in a rollaway (at least at no charge). We could barely walk around in the room once the rollaway was in. This in part was due to us having the smallest room on the floor according to the floor plan schematic on the back of the door. (Used to be all condos and rooms are all of varying size).

Bathroom was nice and large however. There is nothing in the way of stores or restaurants which are within walking distance. Breakfast is expensive. There is a vacant lot next door where construction will start soon on a large Trump property and noise will likeky be an issue.

Taxi fares $20 from airport and $15 to Port Everglades.

In summation, I sure wouldn't stay here if I had to pay for the room and probably would not again even using starpoints.

One correction... This hotel didn't "used to be all condos". It's a BRAND NEW building. It only opened last summer. It was newly constructed and has never been anything but what it is now. I live in the area and watched it being built from the ground up.

I had a very good experience at this hotel in mid February 2005.

This is a 5 star hotel and the rooms are brand new...probably the nicest hotel room that I have ever stayed in...I travel for a living and stay at 4 and 5 star hotels frequently.

The service is good...the restaurant is innovative...the pool area is good...having said that, this is an expensive hotel if you stay at full rate. I would not stay in this quality of hotel for just an overnight stay as I would stay at a hotel that meets that overnight need. The area is okay but not good currently...give it 2-3 years as they are building many very nice places around it. This will be comparable to South Beach in quality and entertainment value (for 40 year olds) or better in 10 years.
