Travel Board Games?

Does anyone know of good compact travel board games? I have been reading that the AK cruises don't have as many activiites going on (we are on the Diamond Princess) and I was thinking about trying to bring a board game. We have cards but was wondering if there were small board games that would fit in luggage and not take up too much space???

We usually take travel Scrabble with us - the version we have is in a zippered case and the little tiles snap into the board so you can close it up and play later if you want (and the pieces don't fly if the board is bumped).

I have also come up with my own version of travel Yahtzee - I just get a set of 5 dice from the Dollar store and then print the yahtzee sheets off the internet. The dice take up no room and we can use our hands as shakers or a cup from the room if needed. It's kept hubby and I and our kids (and nephews) entertained for hours when needed.

Boggle is another good travel game and is Scattegories. Just print off the Scattegories sheets from the internet and then take turns picking letters.

Have a great trip! I'll be watching this thread for other ideas. :)

We have all of the above ones, except we have the purchased Travel Yahtzee. Our newest addition is Bananagrams. We have come to really enjoy this game. It is relatively quick to finish a round, so you can play it if you just have a few minutes, or you can make a longer game out of it if time allows.

You should get an Ipod touch or an Ipad if you don't already have one. All the games listed above, along with thousands more are available. The Scrabble interface in particular is excellent! And you'll never have to pick tiles up after upsetting the board :)

We have this combo and you can play chess, checkers, bacgammon, etc. It's available at Amazon but I bet Target, Walmart or even some drugstores would have the same travel games.

You've just given me one more reason to add to the why I need an Ipad list :D

First, we have sailed the Diamond in Alaska and didn't notice any difference between the activities level on it and the Grand around Great Britain or other Princess cruses we've taken.

Having said that, if you want to break out from the games you would find at a big box store you might consider visiting your friendly local game store and look at the following:

Wizard - a new twist on trick taking games

Bohnanza (yes that's the correct spelling) - a very social trading game - best with 5+ people

Category 5 or Coloretto - card games with very interesting mechanics

Glory to Rome or Race for the Galaxy - very complex card games - if you want a real 'thinker'

Roll through the Ages - a dice rolling game where you are building a civilization vs. just hoping for good numbers

Forbidden Island - don't want to compete? This is a great co-op game and it plays well with children.

Pirate Fluxx - a chaotic card game where you talk like a pirate - a beer helps

We took all sorts of games and cards with us. Just returned from Alaska a few weeks ago. We did not even take the games or cards out of the backpack. The beauty you will see will take in every waking minute. Enjoy the cruise and keep your camera and binos ready... you dont want to miss anything!

Not to mention all the other "non game" things it can do!!!!!! You can even post to Cruise Critic if you're connected : )

Call me old-fashioned but I like sitting around the table and playing a board game.

Thanks for the game list. I am going to copy this post for future reference. I think they sound too intense for me for the cruise, but they definitely sound interesting for our Saturday night game nights with friends.

I have been looking for a set of travel dominos. My SIL has a set (double 6) that are smaller than the normal size and are stored in a wooden box with a sliding top which is the cribbage board. It also has a fabric draw string storage bag.

I have been all over the internet and can't find one like that. Does anyone have any ideas?

I have asked to "borrow" hers, but she knows better, she'll never see them again...

Thanks!

Sound like a nice game. I suggest you do the email notification on ebay. When someone lists a new set, you will be notified. I have found quite a few old games this way. It often takes awhile, but I have had very good luck.

Thank you vbmom87! I've only been on eBay a couple times but I have a co-worker that could do it for me. They have had their game for about five years, I was surprised that I could not find another like it.

If you take dice for Yahtzee, you can play Farkle too....Google the game...it is fun for family. We actually played it on Family Math Night in my classroom. All ages enjoyed it!:)

Haven't heard of it, but will google it. We are going camping this week so it might be fun to try.

there are usually board games in the card room on the ship. i saw many on the carnival spirit. at walmart i have seen many different travel size games also.

We don't like to rely on the cards or board games in the ship game rooms they are almost ALWAYS missing pieces. We went through 5 different decks of cards on Royal's Navigator of the Seas and NONE of them were a complete set. We had to take extra cards from each of the five decks to make just one complete set.

Now we know better and bring our own card decks and our own board games.
