car rental is the best option. budget, avis, and hertz have locations at punta gorda airport. check out flypg.com for more info. its an easy drive. just take I-75 all the way there from fort lauderdale. should take about 3 hours.

We've gone in the opposite direction using Hertz about 2 years ago... an easy drive across alligator alley... one good rest stop about half way....

 

Not sure how it is now but there were few commercial flights at Punta Gorda then and the rental desks were not manned full time....best to check that out tho all Hertz locations have a drop off box.

This is our third year flying to Punta Gorda from Plattsburgh, NY (We are from Montreal) We leave on Saturday for cruises Sunday out of MIA or FLL.

The drive I 75 is great. We stop half way at a Publix to get some drinks etc and off we go. Takes 3 hours.....a nice drive. We usually rent from Hertz,(Downtown MIA location shutltle) Avis (no shuttle to FLL ) Alamo, shuttle MIA and FLL.
