Great Canadian Tour

Recommended Posts

Has anyone done the Great Canadian Tour from Carnival in St John? I'm wondering if it would be something fun to do with my 11 year old son that he can go home and tell his Dad about.

Featuring all things Canadian, you won’t want to miss this tour! Starting with a Tim Horton’s Double-Double and ending with a Sociable at a Pub, you’ll learn all about being Canadian, and at the end of the tour, have the chance to become an honorary Canuck to boot! Don’t miss it, eh?

On this excursion you will:

  • Learn how to call a Moose
  • Try your hand at shooting a Hockey Puck
  • Sample a taste of a Canadian favourite food, Poutine
  • Learn how to speak Canadian
  • Take part in a Loonie Toss Competition
  • Have a chance to win prizes
  • See first hand how Canadians love to poke fun at themselves!

Sounds good, just be aware that a double double is coffee, and a "sociable" is happy hour at a pub - so I doubt you will be able to take your son into the pub, although the tour says no minimum age.

If your son is at least 70 lbs. he may enjoy the excitement of zip lining over the Reversing Falls: http://www.saintjohnadventures.ca or a jet boat thrill ride through the falls: http://www.jetboatrides.com/thrill.html

Thanks Acey SJ - I looked up the double-double because I was afraid it was a double shot. NOT for me (or DS). I couldn't take a coffee with that much cream and sugar either, but I'm sure that's some choices there.

But the pub thing worries me. I was looking forward to a nice Canadian beer on tap. I assumed that he would be allowed in the pub but just couldn't drink (of course). I'll have to ask about that.

Every province has different liquor laws. In BC and Alberta, for example, when no-smoking laws started to come into effect, you could smoke in a bar/pub, but not in a restaurant. Some eating places designated themselves as bars to get around it. However, that means that nobody under 19 can go into the place. Ontario is more relaxed and most "pubs" allow children to eat. They are always marked at the door or you could call ahead.

AceySJ - would you know if children are allowed in pubs during the day in Canada. In New Jersey they are always allowed but must sit at a table, not the bar.

You will be fine with kids at the Saint John Ale House at Market Sq. , Britt's Pub or Big Tide Brewing Company (all near the ship) - Great places to try local beer on tap. I'm not totally sure of the rules for kids - but I'm almost sure if the place serves food and you are accompanying then you will be OK.
