SanDiegoSue Posted July 12, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 12, 2011 Our cruise ship (Princess) offers a horse drawn carriage tour of the old town area of Cartagena. Has anyone done this? How was it? Are there carriages available to rent if we do this on our own? I image they would be much less expensive. Sue
pilotdane Posted July 12, 2011 #2 Share Posted July 12, 2011 You will probably get more replies if you post your question in the "Colombia" section. Yes, there are horse drawn carriages around the central historic area and renting one on the spot should not be a problem. If you are walking around alone (not as part of a tour group) you will probably solicited to rent one among any number of other tourist things. You will need to arrange transportation to the historic area. The dock is in the commercial port and you do not want to go walking outside the port's gates (it's a long walk to the historical area and not the safest for someone looking like a tourist). If taxi's are not allowed to drive down to the ship you can walk down the dock to the souvenir shop, snack counter & security gate at the port. It's an easy flat walk of about 1/4 mile. You should find a few taxis waiting just outside the security gate. Make sure you clearly negotiate where you want to go and set a fixed price before getting into the cab. Don't forget to think about getting back to the ship at the end of the day.
SanDiegoSue Posted July 13, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted July 13, 2011 Thank you pilotdane. I may also post on the Colombia pages, which I hadn't notices. But, your response may be all I need. Thanks! Sue
pilotdane Posted July 13, 2011 #4 Share Posted July 13, 2011 Cartagena has a rich history with a wonderful old town. You certainly do not want to miss it, but you have to be ready for the heckling sales people on the street. Soliciting a horse drawn carriage will not be your problem. They will most likely find you. Follow all the usual pick-pocketing prevetions and you will be fine. It's just annoying trying to walk around and enjoy the place when they are in your face trying to sell you something. If the weather is fine and depending on your seating for dinner make sure you go up on deck and watch the sunset. It can be spectacular.
Wolfie469 Posted August 18, 2011 #5 Share Posted August 18, 2011 I took the horse and buggy tour thru Royal Caribbean. I liked that a modern bus with a pleasant tour guide met us at the ship. Yes, there are people trying to sell you stuff; but the quality of the the t-shirts is very good and have pretty designs--my wife loves wearing them. You can buy t's for $7 if you haggle. Quasar1011 Posted February 1, 2012 #8 Share Posted February 1, 2012 Since it will be my wife's birthday while we will be in Cartagena, I'd like to do a horse drawn carriage ride. How much can I expect to pay for one?
