Larry'sLady Posted July 16, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 16, 2011 This is my review of our 7 day cruise on the Carnival Legend from July 3 to July 10. Those on the cruise were me, Doris, my husband, Larry, our daughter Kelly, her husband Dave and our granddaughter, Macie. We began planning this vacation last fall. Dave made all of the reservations and planned what we would do. Everyone but Larry had cruised before. Dave is a professional photographer, so I cannot take any credit for his beautiful photos. PRECRUISE MINI VACATION: We spent 2 days on the road traveling from our home in Virginia to Tampa. We spent the night in Savannah, GA on Friday and then we spent most of Saturday touring the city. We were fortunate to be in Savannah when they were having the July 4th festival. There were lots of street vendors and other things to do. We took a trolley tour and I highly recommend it. We would have never been able to maneuver around all the squares that make up the city. We went to Tybee Island and had a late lunch at the Crab Shack. We had been there before, so we knew it was a fun place with great food. We left Savannah about 3:30PM and spent the night in Ocala, FL. Larry'sLady Posted July 16, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted July 16, 2011 SUNDAY- EMBARKATION DAY We awoke to beautiful weather. After breakfast, we were on the road at about 9:15 AM. It took us about an hour and a half to get to the channel side. We got our first glimpse of the Legend from several blocks away. We unloaded the luggage & Dave parked the car. We entered the embarkation area and made our way to check-in. The line was not very long. We got our S&S cards and were given Zone 8 for embarkation. We found a seat and waited about 30 minutes. We were on the ship by 11:30. Rooms were ready at 1:30 and all the luggage had arrived by the time we came back from sail away. We explored a little after lunch and then found a spot in the shade to wait for sail away. We left Tampa at 4:10 PM. Lunch in the Unicorn was hectic because everyone was there. The food was delicious and plentiful. The desserts were very inviting and tasted even better than they looked. The Asian food bar was popular and available every day. Dinner in the MDR was cruise casual and we definitely were. All the food was delicious all week with the exception of the beef entrees. The flat iron steak, chateaubriand and prime rib were tough and inedible. We were very disappointed in these dishes. We had table 207 in the Truffles Dining room all week. We had 6 PM set dining. I had done ATD on my first cruise and found out that I preferred that as a set dining time was not good on port days, when lunch was sometimes late. . How anyone else dresses has never been important to me, but I did not notice any improper dress and it seemed that everyone was very nicely & appropriately dressed each night. Our servers were very nice and called us by name after the first night. Macie and I requested Sprite and Diet Sprite the first night and it was on the table each night thereafter. She had a soda card, but I didn’t and I was never charged for these drinks. The service was a little slow, but we didn’t care as we were enjoying some great family time. After dinner we went to Camp Carnival family activities and then the Welcome Aboard show. Larry went to the casino instead of the show. We enjoyed them all. Macie and her family won the coveted Ship on a Stick for being the best family dancers at the Camp Carnival party. She won a medal as best dancer and another ship on a stick for dancing later in the week. If you have children or grandchildren traveling with you, I would encourage them to go to Camp. They have activities tailored to each age group. Macie made a lot of friends and it gave her parents some time to themselves. The children had dinner together on 2 occasions, had a swim party, an “all nighter” from 10PM to 3 AM, and lots of crafts. They were very well supervised and brought to their cabin by a counselor. We sat on our extended balcony, which we loved, and looked at the stars. Our neighbors in cabin 7174 were smokers but I only got a whiff of the smoke when we were in port. In fact, they were only on their balcony once while we were out there. I remembered not to slam the balcony door and not to leave the balcony light on all night. Thanks to CC. Our towel animal tonight was a pig. Larry'sLady Posted July 16, 2011 Author #16 Share Posted July 16, 2011 MONDAY- FIRST DAY AT SEA We got up about 8 AM. We had breakfast in the Unicorn Cafe today. Larry doesn’t like buffets so this was our last buffet breakfast. Sometime Dave joined us in the MDR, but Macie & Kelly liked the Unicorn Café. We wandered around the ship, Larry went to the casino. I attempted to go to the Serenity area but the chair hogs were out in full force. I got there about 9:30 AM and all the chairs were taken; either by a person or stuff. When I spoke to the attendant after 45 minutes and “no shows” were still holding chairs, he just shrugged his shoulders. This happened every day except the day we were in Cozumel. I got a chair about 3PM that day. This was one of the negatives I mentioned when I completed my email survey that I received on Tuesday after we returned home. The Serenity is a beautiful area on the Legend. Too bad everyone doesn’t get a chance to use it. The no children policy was strictly enforced. Kelly and I went to the Lido and found chairs by the pool. Had lunch at the Unicorn then went to the hairy chest contest. Macie and I went shopping in the Fun Shops. Larry & I sat on the balcony, and just hung out the remainder of the day. We got ready for Elegant Night in the MDR. The lobster & shrimp were delicious. I got a shrimp cocktail and Caesar salad every night. We walked around after dinner, taking pictures and just relaxing. Dave took a lot of pictures. We went to the Disco Dance class and the Jazz Hot show. It was good, but the female singers were not the best I have ever heard. We went to the shops again. (Can u tell Macie & I are shoppers?), then to the 4th of July deck party on the Lido. It was very good and we had a lot of fun dancing and drinking. I was surprised that there was a lot of attention being paid the July 4th holiday. There was lots of red, white and blue. Wee Jimmie also had us sing the Star Spangled Banner before the show. Sat on the balcony again and watched the stars. Only a sliver of moon was out tonight. Our towel animal was a pig. He is not as grumpy as he looks. Just early for him. Larry'sLady Posted July 16, 2011 Author #20 Share Posted July 16, 2011 TUESDAY- Cozumel, Mexico Breakfast in MDR about 8:45 then we went into Cozumel. Everyone but Larry had been to Cozumel before, so we decided to give him the grand tour. We went through the Dufry shop where we spent some time looking at the liquor & jewelry. We took a taxi into town; $11 for 5 one way. We started at the Los Cincos store downtown and worked our way back. We bought lots of souvenirs, Mexican vanilla, pottery and Larry got a new hat. We called it his Panama Jack look. On the way down the street, we came upon a Mexican military vehicle with men and AK47s. Larry, being the jokester of the bunch, immediately put his hands on the wall and spread his legs as if he were a fugitive. The men laughed and thought he was very funny. Later on we went into a bar and Dave and Larry tried the local beer at $1 a bottle. They said it tasted like Corona. We came to a store that had a man with 2 parrots out front. We spent some time there talking with him and having our pictures made. He worked with a preserve that bred and raised the parrots. He said most lived to be 80 in captivity. Nichole and Toto, in the pictures, were teenagers. We soon got hot and tired, so we grabbed a cab and went back to the ship for lunch. Dave stayed around and snorkeled at the beach. I have lots of underwater pictures he took in several ports and will share a few from each port. Dinner in the MDR was good tonight. We had 2 desserts. They had Bitter N Blanc tonight. I had talked about it so much after my last cruise that Dave & Larry got it too. They loved it. Later that evening we played Bingo. Larry won on his first purchased card. Too bad he didn’t have that luck in the casino during the week. We got to meet the CD, Wee Jimmy. He was very personable and was seen around the ship a lot during the week. We went to the Motown and More show. It was a one man show with Marcus Anthony, who had opened for Patty Labelle for several years. He had a great voice and sang a lot of Motown hits. Also had interaction with ladies from the audience dancing on stage to “Brickhouse.” He asked ladies who thought they were a brickhouse to come onstage. Needless to say, some were, some weren’t. We didn’t do too much tonight. We have an early day tomorrow in Belize. Our towel animal was a monkey. Cozumel as we approached the port.
