Yet more trouble for Infinity

CELEBRITY Cruises’ Infinity is yet again bound for an unscheduled drydock as a result of problems with its propulsion system, forcing the line to cancel the ship’s 27 March sailing. Company sources told Fairplay that the starboard thrust bearing from the ship’s propulsion system must be replaced. The cancelled cruise is expected to have a negative impact on the earnings of parent Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd of $0.03-$0.04 per share – and is just the latest in a long series of incidents involving Celebrity's Mermaid podded propulsion system, which spurred a $300M suit against the manufacturer in August 2003. This will be the fifth time the Infinity has to be taken out of service. RCCL shares have fallen by 8% this week following a downgrade by Bear Stearns, renewed concerns over fuel costs following Carnival’s quarterly filing, the Infinity propulsion woes, and speculation on major moves in insider ownership stake (see story in today’s Fairplay Daily News).
