Ambergris Caye

We will be tendering in to Belize & wondered if it's possible to get to Ambergris Caye and back to the ship in time. I've heard you have to fly there, but haven't found any info on specifics. If you can help me with the particulars I would greatly appreciate it!

Yes you can. Via Tropic Air or via a water taxi (google water taxi belize and see th eschedules for San Pedro). You may have more time on the caye flying over than bouncing up and down on a smaller ferry boat.

Wade the Gringo on this board can give you the particulars for both.

Just be aware that transportation schedules are on Belize time which may or may not correspond to your ship's time. Right now for example, if you were on a Carnival ship, ship's time is 2 hours ahead of Belize time. A last tender at 4:30P ship time would mean you'd have to be back to the Tourist Village by 2:15P Belize time, which means landing at the airport by 1:45P or hittiing the water taxi dock by 2:10P.

If you are interested in snorkeling after arriving this website has a shore excursion that includes transportation to flight, flight over/back and once you arrive in San Pedro a boat trip with 2 snorkeling stops. We did this a few years ago and it was GREAT, wonderful snorkeling and time enough for lunch or exploring on your own before your flight back. We liked it so much we are going again in Oct from the Carnival Dream.

Excursion is called Shark Ray Alley snorkeling by Air. Description lists one stop, BUT there are 2 snorkeling stops. One for sharks and one for reef.

We used www.ecotoursbelize.com as well for a diving excursion a few years ago. They were WONDERFUL! They have a shop right at the port where you check in, then they drive you to a small airport and put you on a tiny plane that takes you to San Pedro. The diving was AMAZING and we were back in port in time to get back to the ship. I would highly recommend this company, AND a trip to San Pedro! :)

For those who have done both, it is worth it to go to Ambergris Caye instead of Caye Caulker? We have snorkled a lot, including in French Polynesia, and are willing to spend the extra money to go to Ambergris if it is a lot better. Thanks for your help.

Snorkeling is about the same. You need a tour to get to the reef. The towns are different. San Pedro makes Caye Caulker look like New York city. You can see all of Caye Caulker in a day. You can get a good taste of san pedro as well.
