Robrph Posted March 25, 2005 #1 Share Posted March 25, 2005 want to see the Cannery Row and the aqaurium in Monterey and then take 17 Mile Drive to Carmel. Has anyone taken a tour that does those places. All that I have found originate in SF- no good for us. Is the only alternative renting a car for the drive? Thanks Rob
Splinter Posted March 27, 2005 #2 Share Posted March 27, 2005 I am sure you can find local tours, but you probably would save money by renting a car and doing it at your own pace. You need at least 1/2 day at the aquarium...anything less and you will miss a lot. You can park near the aquarium and then walk down Cannery Row for lunch. Plan on 2-3 hours for the 17 mile drive too. Carmel is best seen by parking (good luck!) and walking. Unless you have a couple of days, trying to do all of this may be overly ambitious. Splinter Posted March 27, 2005 #3 Share Posted March 27, 2005 If you really want a tour, you can check with these companies, but not sure where they pick up: http://www.mbstours.com/index.htm http://montereymovietours.com/index.html
Capt. Orca Posted March 28, 2005 #4 Share Posted March 28, 2005 I took that with my 80+ year old mother, and it was nice. The pick up is in Monterey, at the conference center (next to the historic square and fisherman's wharf). We were taken around Monterey and shown movie clips and the locations where they were filmed. Then we went past the aquarium and cannery row, then to 17 mile drive. They gave us 1/2 hour at Pebble Beach, and I think the trip was about 2-3 hours total. You only make brief stops, and it was ideal for someone with mobility problems. The aquarium can easily take a couple of hours. It is at the end of Cannery Row, in an old fish packing plant. Wandering up the block is very easy. Cannery Row is not that long. Because I live about 2 hours away, we have been there often. I usually enjoy wandering around fisherman's wharf, and doing the aquarium because the exhibits always change. 17 mile drive is fun and a private car is the only way I know to go. Perhaps the ship has a short excursion. If you do go, stop at Pebble Beach. It is public, and anyone can go into the clubhouse for a meal or drink or a look-see.
