whiskers9 Posted August 20, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 20, 2011 We will be in Dublin in mid September for a few days. A friend suggested going to Galway. Is this something easily done in a day? If so, what would be the easiest way to get there - train, bus?? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Ms Understood Posted August 20, 2011 #3 Share Posted August 20, 2011 We once had a driver pick us up at Dromoland Castle (not too far form Galway) to drive us to Dublin to catch our flight home and at 5 in the morning (so no traffic) it took 4 hours or so. They are on opposite coasts and there are many many round abouts between one and the other. I would plan on at least an overnight. -------------- Helen
Rare VMax1700 Posted August 20, 2011 #4 Share Posted August 20, 2011 train takes just under 3 hours each way. book your tickets online, as they are much cheaper than just buying at a ticket counter. http://www.irishrail.ie/home/ or by car takes about the same time. advantages of train - relax and view the country side on the trip. disadvantages of train - restricted time in galway, unless you overnight. advantages of car - leave when you like, stop of at some of the interesting villages and towns on the way. disadvantages of car - when you drive you dont see as much, parking in Galway, and you will be driving on the other side of the road :)
Irish1978 Posted August 23, 2011 #5 Share Posted August 23, 2011 Since the completion of the motorway network Dublin to Galway is 2.25 hours (give or take a few mins). If you take the train the station in Galway is in the heart of the city in Eyre Square, I would recommend staying overnight as Galway has great nightlife with lots of live music and great food. The only negative re taking the train is that it does not give you the freedom to explore the Gaeltacht area in Connemara further up the coast where Gaeilge is still the spoken language - amazing scenery aswell....would be a shame to go all that way and them not get a chance to see it not to mention a visit to the Arran Islands! Enjoy your trip! PS - useful site below for roadtrips in Ireland http://www2.aaireland.ie/routes_beta/
whiskers9 Posted September 7, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted September 7, 2011 Thank you for the information. It sounds like it might be best to skip it this trip since we are limited for time. We will just have to return some time and travel the countryside!!
