rent car to drive to beaches in Cabo?

Has anyone rented a car and driven to snorkel beaches? How long of a drive is it? Safety issues?

rent a 4 wheel drive if you plan to head up the corridor past san jose. all the beach roads are dirt/sand and there are virtually no resources till Los Frailles or Cabo Pulmo. The pacific side is not real snorkel friendly .if you're on a day stop for a cruise, better to just book a tour and go up to santa maria for the day.

My family is planning to rent a car from National car rental for the 1st day we are in Cabo since we are there from 9am-to 6-pm. I called National and there office is near the flea/craft market, but they said they would pick us up at the pier. They also have car seat rentals as well. We are planning to spend the day driving from Cabo to San Jose with a stop at Chileno Beach on the way. It is the Marina location if you look at the National website.

Renting a car would be the very easiest way to get to Santa Maria and Chilano. They are located about a 20 minute drive from Cabo toward San Jose (maybe a bit less). You could go to San Jose first, have a bite to eat and check out that town, then hit one of the beaches and then back to Cabo.

 

Much easier than riding the bus since it is a long ways in to the beach from the highway where the bus drops you off. If you don't want to do a snorkle tour, this will be the best way to snorkle. Keep in mind that you will have to bring your own gear (Chilano sometimes has someone renting gear but not always), there are no bathrooms or food (again, sometimes there are porta-potties open at Chilano but not always). There is nothing at Santa Maria but most people think the snorkling is better there.

We met a couple on one of our cruises that had already set up a rental car in cabo. We walked from the pier a couple of blocks into town, picked up the rental car, went to WalMart and bought beer and food, brought our own snorkel gear and drove to San Jose, toured the town, then went Santa Maria on the way back. We broke out our food and beer, snorkeled and had a great day for a total of about $60 for the rental car and food and drinks.
