Jessie,

See from another post your in the Caribean Nov. Which cruise? We will be on N129A.

Cruised on Ventura last Nov and did mostly independant tours following research on here - a great source of information and then looked at websites and booked over the internet. Also used Tripadvisor for info.

All the independant trips we did were on Bonaire (snorkelling - Woodwind), St Maarten (island tour - Bernards Tours), St Lucia (island tour - Spencer tours), Antigua (island tour - Lawrence of Antigua), Dominica (Whale watching - Island Style fishing (Jerry)).

Did do P&O trip when in Ocho Rios - nothing personal, but felt safer sticking to 'official' trips in Jamaica. Also on our flight day home with delayed flights due to the snow back home, we did a half day tour of the island. Trip on Jamica, whist an interesting trip, was of poorest value, enjoyed our Barbados trip and had an excellant, knowledge guide and driver.

This was our first time in the Caribean and before our trip I was unsure whether or not we should go the independant route simply from the point of view of lack of experience in this region. Can honestly say all the above independant tours were great value - in general you were paying in dollars what you paid P&O in pounds and you were getting a less crowded better level of service. Indeed we ended up in Antigua & St Maarten with a private tours when others cancelled which was great because our guides were more than happy tailor their tours to our needs.

If your going to Bonaire can recommend Woodwind for snorkelling. You are providied with a life jacket. We sailed across to the reef, wre split into two groups (6-8) depending on experience - or lack of it in my case! Dee was very patient giving us a briefing before we went into the water. Not having snorkelled before struggled a bit at first but persisted with a very understanding Dee in close attendance until I was more comfortable. Once I got used to it, it was a fabulous experience and would highly recommend it.

Will definatly be doing research on those islands we are to visit for the first time between now and November and will seriously look at visiting some old friends on those islands we visited last year.

We're also on 129A and want to snorkel without having to pay PO excursions prices. We did most of the trips on our own 2 years ago as cruise trips were cancelled due to lack of participants, It worked out cheaper than the cruise excursions anyway. glad to know there will be some 'snorkellers' on this one.

We have booked excursions on line with independent people before travelling. One company which we found to be excellent is Cosol Tours on St Lucia. They do great island tours which includes entrance fees to the Volcano Gardens etc and a beach break.Snacks including a St Lucian Breakfast, local bread and cheese, home made cake and a bottomless bar [watch out for his home made rum !]. A full days excursion cost around $60/70 per person and he picks you up at the Cruise Terminal and he has a Website.:)
